The lead lady is stunningly beautiful, the “evil” guy acting was too over the top, and I enjoyed the PTSD german guy. It´s always funny how in many of these historical movies they have some historical looking uniforms for the men, but don´t even try with the women. One thing that can truly be considered good here is that one shot of the five of them in the cell, waiting for their execution, while the (asian?) plays his instrument; that created a nice haunting aura

They kind of tried a heavy story, which slightly failed because some of the actors couldn't handle it in a credible manner. Not unusual by even top caliber actors in the first few years of sound. I'm not saying anyone was terrible, but it didn't quite get the atmosphere it was going for. Leila Hyams was sweet and one of the shining lights of Surrender (1931). C. Aubrey Smith was easily the actor of the show. He could do such grand roles without effort. A true class act.
