Humanity's ascent is often measured by the speed of progress. But what if progress is actually spiraling us downwards, towards collapse? Ronald Wright, whose best-seller, A Short History Of Progress inspired SURVIVING PROGRESS, shows how past civilizations were destroyed by "progress traps" - alluring technologies and belief systems that serve immediate needs, but ransom the future.

Opening with the 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY transition from ape tool manipulation to space flight, this relies rather too heavily on the notion that the prehistoric relic that is the human brain finds it difficult to act in the long term interests of the species. Needed to ask whether the short-termist tendencies it decries have some more contemporary causes as well.

More [of the same] talking heads [eloquently] pointing out the [obvious] problems this planet faces, while not even beginning to propose any types of solutions. An old boss once told me, "Don't come to me with problems. Come to me with solutions". Not that this was necessarily bad in any way. Just frustrating.

"By turning the idea of progress on its head, the nimble Surviving Progress exquisitely presents to us the possibility that humankind's achievements may cause its downfall." - Kalvin Henely

So we are screwed, but we have no idea what to do about it - the documentary. Meh.
