Suture

Aside from one or two plot conveniences, it's utterly fascinating. The racial in-joke is there simply to provoke thought, not necessarily move the story along or anything, but it adds an interesting level to the viewer's reading of the film.

McGehee/Siegel are smart arses, but they manage to largely avoid the pitfalls of intellectual art film genre exercises with Suture, their impressive noirish debut that recalls both Seconds and The Face of Another yet marches to its own beat. It's a cockeyed fusion of seemingly contrary elements that the directorial duo use to slyly engage high minded themes. The contrasty black and white photography is totally indigenous and unbound by time, and Haysbert exudes a strong screen presence.

An interesting movie…of that, we can be completely certain.

Sutura estreava há 30 anos no Festival de Toronto. Não acredito que não conhecia esse filme, espécie de elo perdido entre O Segundo Rosto do Frankenheimer e A Face do Outro do Teshigahara, com subtexto político e racial, me surpreendeu muito. O monólogo final deixa claro as políticas raciais: por mais que a população negra se insira no modo de vida da população branca, a história nunca os fará iguais porque o background sempre será de um outro ponto de vista. Bem brilhante. RARBG.
