Rather boring buckling of swash in this, Peter Boyle however looks like the biggest fucking pervert with long hair.

Despite the cast, it's an objectively dreadful movie. The plot is inane, with a cartoonishly evil governor robbing and executing people at will and pirates beloved by all Jamaicans as their cannons decimate the island. Individual scenes range from silly to 70's drug-induced insanity. Oh, and everyone has the clothes and hairstyle of a 70's club. And don't get me started on the music. However, there is a charm to Jones and Shaw being silly pirates and Boyle an opulent, bloodthirsty pedophile.

Fun throwback adventure with a great cast kept from greatness by an incredibly dull musical score.

A cheerful, lighthearted throwback, with a story pretty reminiscent of THE CRIMSON PIRATE. SWASHBUCKLER doesn't reach that film's heights, but it provides plenty of color and fun. Robert Shaw is always good value, and makes a good pirate captain, but James Earl Jones, as his first mate, steals the show (Who couldn't love his righteous cry of "In a pig's eye, you swine!"?); Peter Boyle is a fun hammy villain. Excellent action scenes; points off for uneven direction and an abrupt ending.

What really brings this down is not the occasional lapse in taste, but the almost unbelievably lousy and repetitive music score. Still -- a great cast having fun in some really breathtaking locales, some exceptionally well-staged swordfighting action scenes (including a mesmerizing climactic fight between Shaw and Peter Boyle). . . and Genvieve Bujold, a chick who really made my toes curl back in the day. Woo woo! What's not to like?
