Ticks all the usual Burton boxes. Dark? Check. Blackly comedic? Check. Depp and Bonham-Carter? Check. Certainly not Burton's best effort. The source material is mostly to blame for that. Whilst some of the songs are very good, others much weeker or confusing (can't deal with two people singing different things at once). Overall though I really enjoyed it as something a bit different.

Pleasing visuals and great acting, but I just didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. The thought a 'dark' musical was rather appealing, but it just didn't work for me. I think there were too many songs which spoiled the flow of the film and the gore scenes seemed a bit over the top.

Sweeney Todd is a great musical. The film is okay, but was not marketed as a musical, which is strange because I would say 80% of the movie is music. Tim Burton does some interesting things with this film. 1.) It's the bloodiest musical ever made. 2.) Burton casts two non-musical actors as his leads. Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter are not strong singers, but fake their way through it. Bonham Carter is great, but Depp is a disappointment as he wears a permanent scowl through the whole film.

With Burton's recent track record even a promising project outline can end in disaster. However here the deliciously (pun intended) dark source material is a perfect match for the director whose gothic imagery is his trademark. It's a musical ... something which a lot of the marketing seemed to deliberately avoid admitting ... which slows the pace down in places. However the songs frequently hit the mark and help serve up a unique flavour in Burton's filmography.

The Grand-Guignol Broadway musical (words and music by Sondheim), Tim Burtonized for Hollywood. Which means, among other things (such as less music), a ton-of-bricks production design, an ashen color scheme sometimes edging up to the border of black-and-white (excluding the rivers, lakes, geysers of rich red blood), and the de rigueur Depp, showing off a diffident singing voice, as a frightfully frigid avenger, chilling in quite the wrong way.

Burton's trademark style is wonderfully suited for this tale, infusing it with just the right amount of macabre horror and black humor. While thought the trio of Depp, Carter, and Rickman were great (I thought Carter was a standout), the younger actors irritated me and the songs were hit and miss.

I have a lot of problems with this movie...Although the story is, of course, great and the style is pretty cool, there are some things that just ruin it for me. Johnny Depp is simply a "passable" singer and was brooding about 99% of the time, Helena Bonham Carter was just there, Antony and Johanna were completely ruined, they cut out some really good songs, and Dark Comedy is really given a back seat. It just pales in comparison to the stage show.

Surprisingly sedate considering the murder / revenge / cannibalism-centric plot, perhaps because this is so tailored to Burton and Depp's style that it feels predictable. It certainly passed the time, Alan Rickman could give a great performance acting across from a ham, and I enjoyed the gory kills (despite the too-bright blood), but all and all I found it fairly unimpressive.

I'll say this for Burton: he didn't flinch. In bringing this material from the stage to the screen, it would have been easy to soften it, finesse away the darkest of the dark elements, demurely turn the camera away whenever the title character opened up another throat. Instead all of its anger and brutality are intact. It's a solid effort, but also somewhat constrained. Save for the number "By the Sea," none of the staging is especially novel. If great films sing, "Sweeney Todd" hums.

An excellent, serious adaptation of the stage musical, Burton's gothic sensibilities more than work wonders for Stephen Sondheim's intrincate, great score, along with Jonathan Tunick's new orchestrations. I came into this with the bias that I had seen this musical on stage, and viewed it often on tape over the years, so I defintely had issues with the "voices" of these "non-singers", but after 20 minutes of getting over that, I really enjoyed how the material transferred to the screen. Especially in the hands of Tim Burton. He did some wonderfully visual things, (giving characters to each type of pie to "A Little Priest"; taking us into Lovett's fantasy in
"By the Sea"), that won me over...

Much bloodier than it needed to be; half the fun of the original musical was the implication of blood. Of course, red is the only primary color we see in the entire film, excepting a fantasy sequence. Johnny Depp is adequate as Mr. Todd; Helena Bonham Carter owns this movie as Mrs. Lovett.

Delightfully gorey. Wickedly musical. Hints of our favorite Depp characters combine into an original persona who is both likeable and sinister. At first, it's "No! Not another Johnny Depp/Tim Burton/Helena Bonham Carter movie!" Yet, these three seem to be able make movie magic on almost everything they touch. Finally, the plot twists and turns make a person wonder whether Sweeney Todd deserves redemption or retribution.

You need to have an appreciation of musicals to enjoy this movie. I do, and thus I loved this rendition of Sweeney Todd. I also adore Rickman, Bonham Carter and Depp, and felt they each did their characters complete justice, each having their own beautiful moments that can send chills. It's a dark movie, as most Tim Burton movies are, so be prepared for the usual bloodfest when diving into Sweeney Todd, but the humor is undeniable there at the same time. Dark, quirky, and enjoyable.

I'm not familiar with the broadway original, but the songs in this movie are average at best and the story is too cheesy. Also, it tries to combine gore and comedic gothic elements which is not a good idea at all. I would prefer a gory-with-brutal-gothic-metal-growling kind of film even lol, that would be interesting! But Sweeney looked like it has not found its own guiding principle other than a cool art direction. It could be much much better.
