Accomplishes two things: creates one of the most visually beautiful (or terrible) Burton films in a long while, and creates throat-slitting urges whenever anybody sings a note.

Doesn't utilize all the good aspects of the stage play. The dropping of several songs and cutting of characterization hurts the movie. Sweeney's a whiz-bang show, but that didn't carry over into the film. Too bad.

I feel that they did a great job adapting this stage musical to a screen musical. The acting was great, and the music was great as well. But, any Sweeny Todd music fan should know that they did eliminate some of the large ensemble music, which I felt was a detriment to the musical.

Delightfully gorey. Wickedly musical. Hints of our favorite Depp characters combine into an original persona who is both likeable and sinister. At first, it's "No! Not another Johnny Depp/Tim Burton/Helena Bonham Carter movie!" Yet, these three seem to be able make movie magic on almost everything they touch. Finally, the plot twists and turns make a person wonder whether Sweeney Todd deserves redemption or retribution.

I had no clue this was a musical. It was not advertised anywhere as such. I was LUCKY. Great music, epic visuals, etc. Apparently they didn't even know Depp could sing this well when they started this.

Beautifully shot rendition of the 19th century story turned broadway musical. The cast does a wonderful job of bringing every character to their rightful spot in this grim tale of revenge, love, lust, power and much much more. Tim Burton's vision is truly remarkable for this style of story and with the usual suspects of Helena Bonham Carter and Johnny Depp along with Alan Rickman and many others the movie is truly a wonderful piece of cinema that is definitely worth a watch.

It's no secret that I am a huge Tim Burton fan. And all the reasons why he is a fantastic director are all evident in this film. He is known for making wonderful movies out of seeminly dark subject matter, so Sweeney Todd is a perfect story for him to adapt to he big screen. As with most of his films, he takes what society normally rejects and gives it a depth that we often ignore, he makes it more real. If you loved the Broadway version, then Burton's version will blow you away.

Johnny Depp delivers in my opinion his greatest on-screen performance he has ever done because it was a very powerful character. Johnny's singing was absolutely superb for his first time at it. I think this has to be Helena Bonham Carter's best performance as well because Helena was the perfect choice for Mrs. Lovett. I think that this is Tim's best filmed motion picture because he makes his darkest creation yet. This film shows that there can be dark musicals from now on but has to be well made

I loved the overall feel of the movie. But the ending left me frustrated. Also I didnt really care for Sacha Baron Cohen in this type of movie only because all I could think of while he was on screen is borat, bruno and the dictator. All in all its one that I absolutely love but hate at the same time.

A disappointment. Manages to be bloody and bloodless at the same time. I find it disconcerting that I have seen a university production that is more gripping - more understanding of the main characters - than Burton's dark, dank and bitter production.

It's certainly not your run-of-the-mill musical. I personally found the songs a but dull and tuneless (but I suppose in keeping with the generally grim tone of the film). The acting was mediocre and the story was annoyingly predictable. It was an interestingly shot (thank you once more Mr. Burton) and performed piece, but I didn't enjoy it a great deal. Also, Tim Burton uses once more his bog standard cast, which I'm growing slightly weary of.

As a theatre kid, I can say that with out a doubt this is the best movie-musical adaptation ever. With a genius director like Tim Burton and the greatest cast you could ask for (Johnny Depp Helena Bonham Carter, Alan Rickman, Timothy Spall, and even Sacha Baron Cohen), this slasher-movical breaks every musical theatre stereotype there ever was in the best way imaginable.

Better than the 80s version in every aspect. True the musical was out there since the 80s so the story isn't really a new one, but i have to say the quality of the songs is really good. I never thought Johnny Depp was such a good singer.Pretty much every cast member fits the role, and all in all it's what a musical should be - catchy lyrics, interesting story, what more do you need?

Maybe the best thing I can say about Sweeney Todd is that I don't really know what to think of it -- I was reasonably entertained, but never really *involved* (which can be death for a musical). With its mix of black humor, romance, crackerjack world-building, and gore, there can be little doubt that Burton is the best director for the material; the problem is that I'm not so sure about the material.

Delicious. You could say something about Depp's singing, but I love Tim Burton's eccentricity too much for it, and the other actors perform excellently anyway (well, except I don't like Alan Rickman's singing at all). Great acting btw. One word of caution though: gory!

I remember seeing this in theaters vividly. It was my first R-rated movie, and I just so happened to be in my Tim Burton-obsessed phase when it was released. I'd never seen or heard anything about the play before, but after watching it, I was dying to be Mrs. Lovett in a production, and my high school friends would sing everything from it all the time. I'm sure we were annoying as shit, but I have fond memories of this movie anyways. It's not perfect by any means, but it's nostalgic for me.

This may be the only Burton film I like -- and it's a lackluster adaptation of the musical, but for cinema I'll take it. Brooding Depp is a passable Todd, Bonham-Carter's Lovett is quite good, and Rickman's Turpin is creepy enough I wished we got to see more of him. Good lighting and mood -- of course, this sort of story is right up Burton's alley.
