Black liquid boils over an open fire in the first shot while off-screen a fight break out. It's an indication that Thornton will run a tight ship and say the things about racism and imperialism that need to be said, however unsurprising and pessimistic they may be. His style is biblical in its seriousness and insistence, the actors' faces carved from dry desert and wind. What will become of this country, Sam Neill asks, and I'd bet it'll be the same as it ever was.

Beautifully photographed if somewhat sluggishly paced effort benefits from some excellent performances, especially from Neill and Brown, but the story itself feels overly familiar with a screenplay unwilling to really dig deep and explore its characters and the times they live in; lacks the visceral charge of JIMMIE BLACKSMITH which it most closely resembles. Still a worthy and intelligent film, with a terrific flash-back/forward structure which does a fine job of exposition dumping.

Thoughtfully directed film, especially during the rougher scenes. It certainly feels like an important film, though when it comes to its appropriate, yet predictable ending, it feels very direct and any conclusions the film comes to are very blunt (featuring an on-the-nose last line).

From the opening moment you feel the gravitas and it doesn't let up at all. Telling it without music was an interesting choice, letting the atmosphere and sounds around them tell more of the story. Thornton directed the hell out of this, every actor did a fantastic job. The death of the white guy was so deserved, fuck him. Sometimes it's slow to the point of tedium which doesn't allow me to give it over an 80, but the craftmanship is on point here and it has a predictable but important message.

It highlights the incredibly brutal oppression of the indigenous people of Australia. It was frequently plodding and tiresome. Plenty of irony in the story but it came up far short of expectations. I was also annoyed by the small subtitles for unremarkable scenes. It felt like a tired story that has already been told and failed to provide anything fresh, new or particularly worth while. It also has a rotten ending.

Can't you make a movie without racism theme these days?

Sweet Country (2017) is kinda slow, but it's well staged with pretty believable acting. Especially by the aborigines. That's why this feels like a heartfelt film. Even by it's downtime, it's a quality piece of work and a cool Australian western.

A very different kind of movie. An important tale told in a non-cookie cut manner. I kept waiting for it to get good. I'm not sure it ever did.

One of those bleak Australian westerns.

The best thing about this film is that it deftly avoids both the "noble savage" idealism and the marginalization/exclusion of the Aborigenese as in countless Australian neo-westerns. Instead, the film shows people as they are warts & all. There is no golden protagonist with saintly benevolence or unshakable courage. All the characters experience normal emotions from fear to selfishness. The missionary's line about equality is not quite right: "God didn't make man equal, Colonel Colt did."

This would have been much better if it were 20-30 minutes shorter.
