Worst case of sterotyping ever. I live in Alabama and according to what this movie taught me, everybody in the south is 1.toothless 2.uneducated 3.moronic and 4.lazy. While 2, 3, and 4 are correct, I feel I should set the record straight and say we do at least have teeth.

Romance movie about a country girl moving to the big city but longs for the life she left behind. If you like the sound of that then you'll probably like this movie. If you don't then you're probably like me and will find this generic romantic trash.

I scored this higher b/c I like looking at Witherspoon. The problem w/ rom-coms is not just the predictability but the implausible contrivances. This does create some suspense (more like curiosity) at how it'll resolve the fact that Rich-Guy-You-Know-She's-Going-to-Dump-for-Blue-Collar-Guy is a genuinely nice guy, but the 2 leads' fights & makeups always occur just bc the script requires them to. It's not awful, but my interest waned enough to imagine PC types labeling this movie racist now.

Reese Witherspoon deserves so much better than this drivel. She alones saves this from being truly bad. But it's still absolute mediocre rom-com territory.

Kind of an odd one for the movie to make (Spoiler alert) the guy Reese dumps for her ex in the end to be a well-meaning and likable guy who consistenty defends her, is on her side and meets her halfway on everything - but I guess the moral complexities of that are maybe more interesting than the “jerk boyfriend/fiancé” cliche? Well either way as a supposed romantic comedy there’s barely a halfhearted chuckle to be found in 100 minutes, so nothing too worth watching.

Personally, I find the opening scene with LITTLE kissing kids a little uncomfortable & creepy, because it's not a cute wee peck, but it's way too sexy for kids who look like they're maybe 6 at best. Definitely a pro-redneck, anti-urban film about not battling your roots & instead just settling for mediocrity. It could have been a fair & balanced portrait of the culture clash, but it was too #teamredneck. She was just too brainwashed by her past life. Lived this plotline. SHA ended wrong.

It's cute. Not one of the better romantic comedies, but not terrible. I give bonus points to any rom-com where the lead has to choose from two love interests who are both good people.

Romantic comedies can be good, but this is not. In fact, if you asked someone to randomly come up with a cliched story off the top of their head to use in a rom-com they might very well give you something very similar to this (and numerous boyfriends would be dragged to go see it).

It would be churlish to complain about the predictable elements in a “genre” rom-com, rather than focussing on whether the handling of them “works”; for a while, this has its ducks in a row: Witherspoon a cute and charming lead, Dempsey believably sweet without being wimpy, and even Lucas endearing enough as the “boy next door”. Once back in Alabamy, the lack of believable, interesting conflict begins to weigh the film down, leading to a finale that feels forced (PICK DEMPSEY!) Still passable.

Director Andy Tennant has done interesting movies and TV-Series. Sweet Home Alabama is also not normal romantic comedy. Witherspoon is doing good job with her character Melanie. Viewers are let puzzled which guy Melanie would choose if the film title doesn't give it away.

Reese Witherspoon comes of as a very unlikable and unfortunately unredeemed waste in this film. Nothing about her seems to generate whatever feelings they were intending. The film may only be saved by the charming performance from Josh Lucas.

Well, it's got plenty of cliches in it. And I didn't think I'd make it through the whole thing during the first 10 minutes as it was shaping up to be awful. But once she hits the South it turns in to a fine romantic comedy. Ditch the crap cover of the title song at the end titles though. Shouldn't mess with the classics...
