Swingers is a good movie, but it's a masterpiece of tone. In an era where so many movies try to be comedies and dramas at the same time (David O. Russell sucks), here's a film that does it so effortlessly, with characters simultaneously humorous and sympathetic. "No one talks like this" is a common criticism. That's fine, but I don't care. Everyone feels like this, and that's more important.

For a film operating on such a low budget, this is money, baby! So money, and it knows it. All three male leads are great, playing exaggerated versions of themselves. Favreau's script is very natural, to the point where meticulously scripted scenes feel like fluid improv. The film homages and the NHL 94 scene are the movie's best moments, but there are tons of quotable lines here. Beneath its obnoxiousness, there's a real sweet heart to it. The ultimate guy break-up film. Double-down on this.

All the parties and the bars, they suck. I spend half the night talking to some girl who's looking around the room to see if there's somebody else who's more important she should be talking to. And it's like I'm supposed to be all happy 'cause she's wearing a backpack. You know? And half of them are just nasty skanks who wouldn't be nothing except they're surrounded by a bunch of drunken horny a-holes. And I'm gonna tell you something. Are you listening? I'm not going to be one of those a-holes!

Though it's a knowingly funny and hip once-over of the modern American male, the arc is tired. It's the writing, fresh (at the time) faces and pacing that make it crisp and lively. It was enough to have became a cult classic in the pop culture-obsessed '90s. Its nostalgia for the Rat Pack era is underplayed just enough to have avoided alienating the Gen-Xers. Now it's just a slight but charming look at guys you probably know a lot of.

I'll be frank: this didn't age well. If I wanted to see some asshole mope around for an hour, I'd just watch myself in my bathroom mirror. The pacing is slow, no one talks like these characters do, and the payoff is a little too convenient to be believable.

A movie that doesn't strive for greatness, but seems to be pretty happy with what it wants to be. Vaughn was surprisingly funny, the answering machine sequence had me cringing more that my last romantic encounter, and I loved the nods to Resevoir Dogs and Goodfellas. Low-key, but definitely enjoyable. I wish I had some digits from some babies who are also money though...

"You always double down on 11 baby". People, this movie is so money, I'm sure I'm not overrating this. The film kept getting better and better with every minute that passed and it's been by far one of the most enjoyable films I've ever seen. The script is great, as are the actors, one of those films where everything just feels right... Favreau and Vaughn are a great comedic duo, and are bound to make you laugh. A nice buddy movie, loved it!

The Fight Club of nightclubs in that it's smarter than it first appears. Sure it's exaggerated, people don't really talk or act like that but a lot of moments feel authentic in a "we all know one of these guys" way - the guy who's still stoking the Vegas flame three hours into that dark, empty desert drive, the guy who arbitrarily declares the party dead, the guy who curses way too much at video games, the guy from "Office Space". Jon Favreau as the dumped sod is surprisingly easy to root for.

Passable cringer, where you spend 90% of the movie uncomfortable at what you are seeing. Not because its bad, but because the antics are portrayed in such a way you can feel the pain of the characters, and just want to look away. Let down by a weak plot, but strong performances make this one watchable and enjoyable (in a sadistic way)

This is one of my favorite college movies. First time I watched was when I was doing RA training. This is Vince Vaughn at his best. The whole two day rule is hilarious (because its kinda true). The roller coaster ride Favreau goes on through this movie symbolizes what love can do to you sometimes, but Vaughn symbolizes why friends are so so so important. and yes Your Alls Grown Up (I'm standing on my computer desk).

One of the earlier "painfully funny" works that have become so common these days on both the big screen and television. Vince Vaughan steals the show, and is still working today off of what he does here. The supporting players fit nicely around him, and the narrative ties up nicely with just the right amount of heart--not too much, and always willing to undercut the serious moment (without trivializing it) for another laugh. Still an enjoyable movie, all these years later.

At times likable, at times cringeworthy, Swingers has some moments but the pick artistry culture of the male friends feels quite dated in 2023. The friendship between the leads, especially Vaughn and Favreau, is at times quite touching, though, and there are very good scenes. The scene where Favreau's character calls a woman six straight times and leaves messages because he worries about how the last one sounded is funny but painfully awkward. Very watchable but doesn't live up to its reputation

A film where the big picture is rather uninteresting and highly derivative, yet the smaller details are what engross me. The dynamic between the heart-broken romantically awkward dude and his charismatic womaniser friend, and seeing these interactions ensue, isn't always fun (and neither is the elongated 'swing revival' dance-off). But the film is so confident with the in-jokes, the specific dialogue, and camaraderie, and it's here where the film's originality and humour start to shine.

Wonderfully written and performed comedy has what all great comedies have at their heart: a desire to look at truths and half-truths we all tell ourselves, perfectly embodied in Favreau's hilariously flop-sweaty desperation (though Vaughn has never been better as the apparently more confident of the two). Painful but honest scenes abound ("the phone-call" is a mini-masterpiece) and Liman's kinetic direction papers over the ultimately episodic digressions in the screenplay.

This is a 'mild chuckle' of a movie, where precious little happens to anyone, despite their best endeavours. That said, any bloke that has had his heart broken, been single for a while and supported by a group of friends will know exactly why this film hits home so well, and the internal struggle between self pity and a desire to move on is portrayed perfectly. The dilemna is rarely portrayed so brilliantly as in "the phone call". Just perfect.

The pacing isn't perfect, but the film has good dialogue and a funny script. It doesn't hurt that it has Vince Vaugh and Jon Favreau in it. Apparently, this movie is some kind of classic in LA, because it's an independent film that garnered attention. Thinking critically, it's interesting that this film is essentially a mockumentary about struggling actors in LA (with the leads acting the parts they lived in real life). Perhaps that's why the film still resonates in Hollywood.

There's a fine line between a dated film & an authentic capturing of a scene/time/place. I feel like this one is on the authentic side and it's the dialogue that does it. If it didn't stick so ardently to spurting that absurd 90's vernacular, it would have surely been a mopey flat affair. The acting due to this, appears ultra-natural, that character seemed to fit Vaughn like a shoe too.

Wildly self-indulgent, considering nothing of particular interest happens and what little does happen feels like an utter waste of celluloid. But the movie has a charm to it, it captures a time and place, it's just the people there need personality transplants, and there are some very funny gags in parts. Maybe it's for the best these people seem like assholes, but in a relatable way - some are smug, some are aggressive, some are just idiots. They're real people! Just boring people!

While occasionally amusing, what I'm really happy about is that this movie is a time capsule of the popular and bizarre swing revival of the 90s. How it came to be will remain one of the great mysteries of the 20th century, but at least we have proof that it existed. At its heart it's a fairly run-of-the-mill independent comedy with smatterings of wit. I can't complain too much.

Mostly very funny, though the degree of self-awareness is not always to my taste (some of the gags go on a bit long as well). My biggest gripe would have to be that things are wrapped up too suddenly and neatly--the abrupt and substantial change in Favreau's character near the end is simply unbelievable (and what they do with Vaughan's is silly).
