The last line of the movie (no spoilers) is "what the fuck." It's not a question, it's a statement. And that sums up my feelings about this movie. How did it get made? Who read the screenplay and thought, "yeah, we should go ahead and make this." But all that said, I was beyond entertained. It is absurd and surreal and an excellent foray into magical realism. But oh so bizarre. I might have hated it, but I think I loved it.

Holy moly, this was something else. Michel Gondry-esque creative madness with a more unhealthy and sinister type of self-delusion buried just under the surface. Speaking of which, props to Radcliffe for his fantastic performance. I cackled like a maniac every time he barfed up those fountains of corpsewater. A warped version of the 'indie movie about a sad lonely schmuck' that I can easily imagine someone hating, but was right up my oddball alley.

I would say it's just as weird as the trailers and that it is for sure not for everybody, but I thought it was really well-written. It's easy to appreciate if you understand the concept and what's going on by the end. I personally enjoyed most of the weirdness of it all. The two leads and the dialog are funny, and I also found it to be well directed. I also liked the score. Worth a look if you're interested.

A surreal survival story, an odd-couple comedy, and an existential drama all in one: With exquisite cinematography (slow-motion shots of butts and waves are each equally stunning), superb visual effects, and an a cappella soundtrack often featuring the characters themselves, the spiritual themes of life and love are brilliantly and uniquely weaved together with the crudely bodily: masturbation, farts, etc. The final act falters but with all its weirdness you knew it was going to be hard to land.

Postmodern, indie, toilet humor. Flips Cronenberg's body horror into body humor. It is commendably ambiguous and lacking in exposition, with uplifting themes of resilience and authenticity; and disturbing themes of loneliness and subjective reality (mental illness.) Why didn't I enjoy it very much? It might be b/c the primary inspiration for it all is, simply, farting. This is perhaps cinema's first foray into the question: can farting sustain a feature film? Check one in the "no" column for me.

Dano and Radcliffe are so goddamn convincing with this concept -- so goddamn endearing in their search for survival, which may actually mean purpose, which may actually mean self-acceptance -- that the twisted kinship ends being marvellous entertainment. The film's got a surprising number of layers, saying some poignant things under some of them, and yet still pulls off an ending that's so self-aware of how dumb it is that I can't believe how good it is.

Farts and boners, but... a Shane Carruth cameo. And I did laugh a few times. Not at the flatch 'n stiffies stuff, as too-obviously intended. The handmade 'movies' bit was a solid laugh. I guess I'm glad something like this exists, even if it wasn't quite what I was looking for.

This movie works solely because of Paul Dano and Daniel Radcliffe's terrific performances. All of the otherwise lowbrow humor would just be unfunny lowbrow humor if actors of their caliber were not in this film. It's an extremely weird movie (not necessarily a good or bad thing) that absolutely nails it stylistically. Now I didn't really understand all of its hidden message metaphorical what not, but regardless the movie was just so utterly enjoyable I don't really care.

As I was loving this movie I became very dismayed that it seemed to be transforming into the typical indie movie where the protagonist is just a whiney guy that's too shy to talk to women and if he could do that he would just be happy. That is a little too strong of an aspect of the film but this movie did it in the most acceptable way by being weird as all hell. Daniel Radcliffe was transcendent, I hope he wins some award for a Best Supporting Actor.

The fun of watching SWISS ARMY MAN is in peeling back its layers of protective weirdness to discover a story that's by turns touching, exhilarating, and deeply sad. It's an absurd operetta played in a very distinct key--one that isn't always pleasant, but is damn sure to be remembered.

I'm continually impressed by Paul Dano, he's crazy talented. As for Radcliffe, it's bizarre and hilarious that the first ounce of respect he's gotten from me comes from a role as an overly flatulent and boner wielding corpse. I'm amazed that he pulled it off and spectacularly at that. "Swiss Army Man" is a hare brained idea of a movie that slyly shrugs off it's retarded subject and wades neck deep into topics of perception and existentialism in a way that even I have no choice but to love.

I can't fault the lead actors, who do a frankly amazing job. But the indie pretentiousness is pumped up to 11 here. It's so full of smug statements delivered as profound insights into the human condition wrapped up in fart jokes.A social misfit who is terrified of women spends a lot of time in the woods nestling up to a corpse and then has existential worries about why women think he's a creep.

Of course I'd love the idea of a movie where Eli Sunday drags around Harry Potter's farting corpse, and I was often doubled over laughing during the viewing. In some way I feel that this much insanity being in support of what is a mostly typical indie arc is a bit disappointing, but the commitment to a dark ambiguity at the end sold me on it. Dano and Radcliffe are excellent, especially the latter's devotion to the physicality of his role.

A man stuck alone on a tiny Pacific island befriends a corpse who washes up on his beach, and they develop a bizarre kind of bromance as they navigate their way home. Picture Weekend at Bernie's with way more flatulence and masturbation jokes. Daniel Radcliffe plays a dead body admirably well, but the second half of the film focuses way too much on the self-imposed loneliness and general awkward loser-ness of Paul Dano's character for my tastes. The last 5 minutes were unbearably stupid.

Definitely a guilty pleasure, but oddly enough one of my favorite films this year. Swiss Army Man is weird, granted. Yet, it has some serious charm to its production, direction, and acting. Radcliffe and Dano are remarkable, and the film is cute, if not a little disturbing. If there's one issue, it's that the ending is a little off-putting but that's far from ruining new favorite.

A clever attempt at making a life-affirming film where the utter absurdity acts to short-circuit the impulse of the otherwise coolly detached to sneer at such seeming-naivety, though sadly it all falls apart in the final ~20 minutes which fails in its efforts to tie in an actual plot to the proceedings.

Maybe the best fart joke ever committed to film. There is so much dedication to it that it's almost a character of it's own. Yes, farts. An attempted suicide leads to a dead body leads to a fart. Oh yeah, there's a movie here too. In all seriousness, it has funny bits but wears a little thin in both the comedy and drama--during the middle portion--but the ending brings it back around impressively. It's a good, but not outstanding, indie flick underneath the weirdness but it's entertaining.

There's something quite magic about the way it goes above and beyond in committing to that concept, combining a sophomoric sense of humor with strikingly beautiful aesthetics, free-flowing existential dread and a whole lot of weird "will they/won't they." Dano and Radcliffe give their career-best performances, and, thankfully, the film is anything but cloying. It's as singular an indie movie as you could possibly hope for in 2016. I was quite happy to be baffled by it.

It promises to be a singular experience, and it delivers. It is an (often brilliant) freeform meditation on the law of diminishing returns. Swiss Army Man was way more than I bargined for, but I mean that in the best way possible. Paul Dano (Hank) and Daniel Radcliffe (Manny) are an absolutely dynamic duo in this film about survival, infatuation, hallucination, intoxication, humiliation, and farting. Lots of farting. It features some pretty direction, both in color and just in environment in general, from Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert too.

The local theatre had this listed as a film they were playing. So, my wife and I went to the theatre, only to find out that the listing was on a 3rd-party website, and not actually correct. I missed out on seeing this in theatres, but luckily, Netflix has come to the rescue. Well shot, well produced, with colorful, creative sets, costume, concept even. The ST is a highlight actually, reminding me of the kaleidoscopic works of Dan Deacon. Completely puerile content, which matches the boiled down 'one true love' storyline, & some pseudo self analysis to boot. I did think the final sequence detached itself into something needlessly abstract, even switching from the established tone to something more 'post-car crash'.

Great visuals and a unique, catchy score. The directors were once quoted as saying that their goal was to have audiences crying through fart jokes. That definitely seems to come through here. The film walks a bizarre tightrope between emotionally moving and brazenly stupid. I liked the movie for the most part but the ending was still a letdown for me. It's a well directed, funny movie with a very shallow emotional core, a plot that doesn't make much sense and a bunch of inconsistencies when it comes to characters and inner logic. Definitely an interesting and very original film; didn't quite hit the right notes for me. I would have been happier with a traditional Robinson Crusoe plot, with P. Dano using H. Potter's Swiss army functionality to get home safely. Instead, the film got quite sombre and introspective. Even a bit psychoanalytical and overloaded with metaphor, when it wasn't creating Gondry-style surreal montages. The ending was more melodramatic than touching, and the film truly ended up far from its origin.

This film exemplifies the saying that fantasy is "the impossible made probable." SAM's magical realism uses the form to have some intriguing & relevant conversations regarding life, love, loss, fear, and death. The soundtrack is catchy as hell, turning the film into a kind of upbeat & pop Beasts of the Southern Wild. But the film makes a similar mistake as Birdman, by including an ending that tries to have its cake and eat it too. Still, it is a fun comfort blanket of a film. Worth watching.

Refreshingly original take on survival drama tropes is so well set up in its initial stages, and ultimately so completely unpredictable, that its shortcomings are almost forgivable; a lot of padding (especially in the second half) and clumsy stabs at profundity lead to an unsatisfying, half-hearted conclusion. Superbly performed by both Radcliffe and (especially) Dano; snappily directed utilising some gimmicky tricks (freeze frames etc.) which work because they are so well utilised.

If the premise doesn't turn you off, it's an imaginative and frequently delightful dark comedy which doubles as a rather sweet bromance. Dano is good, Radcliffe is excellent, and the inspiration rarely flags...until the final act, which doesn't entirely come off, though not enough to diminish what came before.
