Symphonie diagonale

A tilted figure, consisting largely of right angles at the beginning, grows by accretion, with the addition of short straight lines and curves which sprout from the existing design. The figure vanishes and the process begins again with a new pattern, each cycle lasting one or two seconds. The complete figures are drawn in a vaguely Art Deco style and could be said to resemble any number of things, an ear, a harp, panpipes, a grand piano with trombones, and so on, only highly stylized. Cool little rhythmic piece that works well without sound.

tells us at the start what it's supposed to be about - a study of the importance of time interval in film, presumably visual rhythm. must be seen without sound.

Another illustration of how something quite interesting can be done with very little

Interesting play of formal relationships, which results in its harmonic qualities.

The music that accompanied this when I saw it was god-awful and ridiculously repetitive, and kinda ruined it for me. I've also been lead to believe that it should be seen without music entirely, which makes sense.

Without the "music".

Meaningless forms steadily appear and disappear. Supposedly, this was originally conceived of as the first part of a 4-movement "symphony" that never materialized. It's all so dry and pointless, it hardly feels worth sitting through the whole thing as it is.
