A young woman is invited by her girlfriend, who lives in an English country mansion, to stay there with her. The estate, however, isn't quite what it seems--and neither is the friend who issued the invitation. (imdb)

This is very well made, with fine cinematography, good performances (Pleasance is great) and a wonderful evocative score which links in well with effective sound design. The muted autumnal palate works, as does the restraint shown by the director, which only really starts unravelling later in the film. Perhaps its a bit slight in terms of plot and resolution, but that's a nit-pick. This is tense, creepy, and ultimately quite unsettling. Well worth seeking out one of the recent BD releases.

Halfway between Repulsion and MR James, this one is bolstered by some effective cinematography and a strong act, but ultimately is too plodding and brings nothing new to the table.

Beautiful, suffocating atmosphere is how I'd describe this one. Lush shots of British countryside that are begging for a restoration(but this will probably never happen as the original print has gone missing), sound design where everything adds to the tension (a pluck of a harp, chopping of wood, etc) and where even simple conversations feel sharp and tension filled.

Espécie de mistura entre Os Inocentes e Psicose, tem toda a questão psicanalítica da psique estruturada como casa bem desenvolvida, mas por alguma razão o fato da Angela Pleasence ser a cara do pai me tirou a concentração completamente. DVD Versátil Obras primas do Terror Volume 7

Shares surprisingly much with Larraz's earlier Whirlpool: guest arrives at a remote house by the lake where something bad has happened and will happen again. This is a classier version without the exploitative elements. Scott's score works well and sound design stands out. Cinematography is again top notch and uses the locations to great impact. Pleasance has an unique face and she plays her part well; it's a pity that she hasn't worked more. Needs a re-watch to evaluate on it it's own.

The performances are very nice--Angela Pleasence has an intriguing presence--and the film's got a frightening and suspenseful buildup. I've come to enjoy it more on repeat viewings.
