Frequently tedious, but still captivating - largely due to the unforgettable main character (the other characters being rather on the forgettable side).

A character study turned upside down by the way Lapid frames situations, dialogues and street-wandering monologues - always in not obvious fashion. I don't know if I love the first hour, but the second one delivers provocative imagery about how hard it is to escape oneself in a land isn't yours. The ability to survive Israel's putrid military politics and place yourself in a nation of free speech seems harder than it seems. Thinking and living in another language might be a violent experience.

30% of the time I was wondering if I could pull of a mustard pea coat. 30% trying to cling to the movie, which doesn't cohere (by design, probably). 30% thinking this was pretty good, well-made, sometimes in the same spirit as a 1960s New Wave movie. 10% wanting pasta.

Begins with an opaque scenario fitting of a nightmare... and then levels out to a sequence of slightly odd scenes and, eventually, not at all odd scenes. While the film at first seems like it will be a story of a man trapped in an evil, unfamiliar world, it changes into a story of a man with a litany of quirks seemingly immune to life's troubles trying to turn his life into something more poetic than it really is. An obvious "young artist" film, but not something I found to be all that new.

Metaforlar dolu 1 film. Eski İsrail askeri, Fransa'da aklını kaçırır. Boş evlerde makarna ile yaşayan Yaov, ve iki arkadaşı hem kendi hayatlarını, hem Yaov'un hayatını değiştirmek ister. İsrail'in yaşadığı zulmün sahte olduğunu anlatıyor. Fransa'ya da iyi giydirmiş. Geçmişini hatırlamayan geleceğini düşünemez. Berlin Film festivalinde en iyi film ödülünü kazanması şaşırtıcı. Haydi kızlar oturmaya mı geldik? Pump up the jam pump it up.

The concept is more significant than the movie itself. An israeli immigrant that tries to create a new personal identity but is never able to do so; the impossibility to erase the past/parts of himself and the excessive love to a different culture (which is ridiculed). The french characters: a rich guy that considers himself a writer, a musician that executes classical music and fucks around - all is mediocrity. It's basically an overdramatic social portrait. Stylistically it's tiring.

38. İstanbul Film Festivali - City's.

In French, Lapid's ceremoniously crude filmmaking almost fits in - it's no wonder this appeared on the cover of Cahiers, the bastion of all things unsubtle and obtuse. Every line of horrible text here screams empty pretense of profundity.

I could swear the whole running time the next scene would play out with "formidable" in the background -_-
