Director Andrzej Zulawski's adaptation of Manuela Gretkowska's controversial screenplay tells the story of an anthropology professor Michal's (Boguslaw Linda) who as the movie progresses develops two overwhelming obsessions. The first one is a mummified, 3,000 year-old, perfectly preserved body of a Shaman he and his colleagues have recently dragged out of a swamp, and the second - an enigmatic student (Iwona Petry) he meets by chance at Krakow Railway Station. As is usual with Zulawski, I'm not 100 or even 50% sure of what the fuck I just watched, but it included one mummy, some cannibalism and lots of sex. Some like it unpleasant (I know I do! Oh boy, oh boy!), but most will want to give this a pass, as Zulawskis output is the dictionary definition of "not for everyone".

I love Zulawski's style, doing nothing by half-measures with crazed camerawork, larger than life performances and demented, exaggerated psychology, but here it's not as consistently mesmerising as in some of his other films instead occasionally drifting into silliness. Zulawski often feels to me almost like he's throwing whatever pops into his head at the screen, but whereas elsewhere these elements coalesce, in this film a lot of the scenes just felt awkwardly placed or disruptive to the mood.
