If you're into crazy martial arts shenanigans, apart from some awkward comedy, this is an absolute blast. And, yes, I am very much into crazy martial arts shenanigans.

the downsides: 2 dimensional characters, a plot that wasn't new anymore by 1974, at least 2 instances where you can see the wires. the upsides: everything a genre fan looks for is here and impeccably done. plenty of crazy, creative, well-executed fights(ok fine minus those two wires). tons and tons of energy through the whole movie. lots of humor, none of which stumbles on its way in translation. i went in expecting to be simply entertained and was definitely impressed.

The fight scenes are all spectacle and no realism (special fx abound) but this had become the standard by this point in Kung Fu cinema, especially when the tone is comedic. It bothered me more that the film grows progressively silly as it goes. Jet Li is charming, and the action is entertaining enough.

If you're expecting something serious, don't. This would be a lot more effective without all the comedy relief (oh, and you can see the wires a lot, too). Still it is pretty entertaining, and I do love to watch Michelle Yeoh open up that can of whoop-ass!

Best action scenes in Hong Kong cinema, which means best anywhere in the world. Also very focused story in which everything that happens comes out of who the characters are. First rate.

Above average kung fu flick. My only complaint is that the film doesn't spend enough time on Jet Li's Tai Chi abilities, which are fantastic.
