Its minimalism is both its hook and its downfall. It's hard to commit to a film that is essentially predominantly quotidian repetition when the main character has no background, no compelling motivation ,and a stoic thanklessness when people help him. It's hard to empathize with the character and so it's hard to empathize with his plight. The idea behind the movie is nothing short of brilliant and Yu's supporting role really steals the show, but the execution leaves something to be desired.

A fabulous film that more people need to see. It's encouraging to see this kind of filmmaking taking place in the US. The film is shot in a verite style, engenders empathy for its protagonist through repetition, and offers a humanistic vision of illegal immigrants through its quietly powerful narrative. This is the kind of film that requires active participation from the viewer, but the end result is well worth it. Truly a wonderful film.
