Tale of the Archery at Sanjusangendo
Another period piece, with legendary characters and vaguely martial overtones. The script has some wit, and the screenwriter makes a small effort to give the characters dimension, but there's really not much that Naruse can do with this material, other that create beautiful deep-space compositions for the exterior shots. "A Tale of Archery feels very much at odds with the popularly accepted view of Naruse as a stasis-minded chronicler of the modern-day Japanese working class." - Keith Uhlich

The feeling I got from this one was positive, but I didn't get any major vibes from this Mikio Naruse film. I rarely do. The bow and arrow aspect gave it a fine focus, but of course being shot while the war was still going on, there are limitation with the production, making feel like a minor creation.
