I can't help loving the atmosphere but story is so weak that it breaks my heart to see "Tales from Earthsea" title on it.

Too much farming, not enough magic and dragons. Good animation in some parts (backgrounds particularly), but the people are sort of blah.

The animation and design are absolutely gorgeous. The colourful town in the ruins, the dragons shedding sparks, the sunrise behind the heroine—every moment is rich in beauty. Much in the film feels simple—the morality (popularly criticized by the author of the source material), the world and its mechanics, and the relationships—but there is loveliness in its lack of complication: for me, it was effective. A soft and delightful film.

When compared to the rest of the Ghibli catalog, this film sticks out. While it's plot can be dull and lessened from the typical Ghibli stuff, Goro lays down some of the best animation we've seen out of Ghibli. It's impressive, and the voice cast matches. The only thing to complain about is its unfulfilling story, but it's hard to say that this is anything less than a good movie.

Plenty here to enjoy despite many faults. There is no doubt that "Tales from Earthsea" lacks a coherent core; with the main plot messy and several of the character relationships shallow. Probably worst of all is just how clumsy and heavy handed this movie presents it moral messages. But, it's so god damn pretty in places and there were several scenes I loved. The villian was boss too! Riddled with problems, but worth your time. No doubt Goro has some way to go to match his genius father!

While is has alot of that Ghibli beauty, this movie is just kind of dull and nothing terribly interesting happens in it. Things just seem stiff and while some of the visuals are still amazing alot of the joy that I associate with Ghibli is just sucked out of this.

Visuals not quite up to their (extremely high) usual standard. A mostly predictable story with some real clunky twists and reveals.

The pacing is definitely off, but I don't see eye with criticism I've read. The visual world building relative to other Ghibli favorites isn't developed as much because the focus is the psychological landscape. The film somehow delivers both soft endearing moments of beauty and dark shades of the soul while navigating an inner struggle over nihilism.

Slow at times, but I thought the story was pretty cool (aside from some plotholes), the animation was amazing and the soundtrack was 'Lord-of-the-Rings-like-GOOD' :)

Really quite dissapointing movie from Studio Gibli. I didn't read the book(s), but I didn't think the story was interesting enough to be a movie and certainly wasn't worth making into an animated movie, Japanese or not. It's just too boring and doesn't have anything to show off.

No aspect of this movie ever exceeds "good", and most just barely avoid "bad". So many plot holes, overly convenient situations, inconsistent characterization, and unsatisfying payoffs make this movie unworthy of Studio Ghibli's reputation for magical animated features.

This movie has all the ingredients to make a great one but the plot doesn't really do it justice. I feel left with so many questions unanswered as if the movie was rushed.

I don't know why they choose to make a salad of the books. I've read the first three so far, and I can see there's elements that don't belong to that story. It lost the unity, in my opinion. Made a more surreal plot, but also weaker. (And I can't understand why they gave the boy that dreaded anime personality with a hidden wild laughing side.) Weak for a Ghibli movie, even though I enjoyed it.

Nice animation, and it started out with intriguing cities and world building, but then things stopped happening, the settings turned dreary to look at, and the plot turned weak. I remembered why I fell asleep the first time I tried watching it.

A huge disappointment, just Goro trying to copy his fathers style and just bastardizing a book. Goro's next movie is much better and feels more his own (Up on Poppy Hill), go watch that instead.

The story and the main animation are really weak. Lots of points for background artsts. The only good animation was during the ending fight. Ghibli suppoused to stick with Hayao Miyazaki; the skills did not inherit from father to son.

This film leaves so much unexplained, not tied up, and when it does try to explain, things make no sense. It feels like a waste of my time. The art is both pretty and lazy- lack of details when things are far away is not an art style. Watercolor impressionism doesn't mesh well with things.

Honestly, I don't get the hate that Goro Miyazaki gets, I loved both Tales from Earthsea & From Up on Poppy Hill and while I hated the animation for Earwig and the Witch I liked pretty much everything else. For me at least he is a solid director whom I am always excited to see something new from. Is he as good as his father? No not really but so what, he's good in his own right.

By far the worst that Ghibli has to offer, but not all bad. The soundtrack is very endearing and Timothy Dalton does a good job, as does Dafoe, but that's about it. Goro has a lot to learn before he can hope to live up to his father's work.

It's OK. It's not technically a Miyazaki, but it comes from his studio. Not a complete waste of time as there is still some good animation, but probably one the least enjoyable and a somewhat more nonsensical tale of his.

It took well over an hour for them to get going on the story and then it never really lived up to the long drawn out beginning. If it hadn't been my boyfriend's idea to watch it, I would have turned it off after the first hour of no discernible storyline.

boring and extremely sexist. maybe that says something about Japanese traditions but never occurred to me at other Ghibli films for some reason. considering Le Guin is a woman and an author of a book (left hand of the darkness) which consists of gender fluid people, i'm inclined to think this is why this film didn't do well with both being progressive in that sense, staying true to the soul of the story and still traditionally Japanese. this is all speculation though.

This unfortunate didn't hold up that well in rewatch. It's still a pretty decent entertaining fantasy anime. The animation, especially the background animation, looks stunning at times. But it's too generic to really stand out. It misses the simple playfulness Miyazaki senior infuses all his movies with. This is much darker and serious in tone. It also makes explicit what senior so well makes implicit. While the characters still feel much more underdeveloped and the plot lackluster.

Alarmingly awful. Le Guin's novels are wonderful but this dreary adaptation, for baffling reasons, jettisons all of the most cinematic sequences - the Dragon's Run, the raft people - with elements of the second and third books pasted awkwardly together. Humourless and boring as hell.

Despite its deliberate slow pace it's Kind of a Masterpiece, especially for a first-time director. Authough Le Guin was disappointed, I very much felt her presence in this picture. I was forced to watch this in the English dub, which is NEVER my choice for foreign language movies; but this is a better than average job with a good cast. I say the critics and the author are both wrong here! This is a very good (but slow and measured!) film fantasy, and MUCH more thoughtful than the average

For a first film this isn't so bad. A little bit dull at times, not very imaginative, the characters are stock and the animation merely adequate. And it's loaded with the typical mystical mumbo-jumbo and vague philosophical platitudes. But it still works as a fine fantasy adventure. Though the characters are a tad too familiar, the heroes are likeable and complex enough. The slow pace doesn't seem to hurt the plot development that much, and although I wasn't swept away, I was engaged enough.

Very good quality fantasy, but it left quite some unanswered questions in me. Just to mention one without spoiling anything, I am not sure about the true nature of a main character, even after watching through the movie. Nonetheless, I say it's a must watch for all traditional fantasy fans. There is magic here which is rare to find, and would be a shame to miss it.

During the first half of the movie I was wondering why this one has such a bad reputation, as it opens intriguingly, has good music and really pretty background drawings in the city they first come to. But eventually it introduces some pretty weak villains and loses steam overall. The conclusion relies on character backstory and magical concepts that are only poorly explained if at all.

The ending on this movie really makes no sense. I wont spoil it here.. but it really hurt my score for this movie. The animation is certainly the best thing about this movie, but that's not saying a lot. Also, the voice over they chose for "Cob" was really a mistake.

I didnt read the real story or aint have a solid idea about this fantastic-verse. But this movie is a lackluster. Its not engaging, its floating around w/o touching anything, it aint fills any emptyness in the plot. Its not terrible or bad, But for ghibli standarts its kinda bottom entry. And for general animated story telling its not great at that part either. Its enjoyable but ı wouldnt try to gain specific time to watch this. Like ı do for other ghibli works.
