Perennially provocative documentarian Nick Broomfield has frequently turned to crime investigations (Aileen Wuornos: The Selling of a Serial Killer, Biggie & Tupac) that raise larger questions about gender, race, and class inequalities in America. Now he digs into the case of a South Central Los Angeles serial killer known as the Grim Sleeper, whose string of murders spanned twenty-five years. (Toronto International Film Festival)

It explores the streets of south central LA, delving into how this killer was able to remain active for 25 years. Interviews eventually lead to a former prostitute named Pam, whose big personality and street connections make the investigation bound along quickly. Given the material, this a remarkably funny film (thanks Pam), and the methods it uses to lay out its findings are beyond reproach. Unfortunately, the answers they find are nothing new, which leaves the film lacking a punch.

It's a rough story with a quite successful social commentary aspect. Some might say it's biased, but what can you do when no white guy cares to comment?

A fantastic documentary that expands its scope beyond the Grim Sleeper. It's a multi-layered doc. The documentary, while detailing the horrible crimes, also takes aim at the institutional failings of the city and the police force. They were black sex workers, so they were able to be killed with frequency and over a long period of time because no one cared about them. At the end of the doc, Pam (?) puts it best, "if it wasn't him, it'd be another motherfucker killing us."

sad to think that people can be so far down the social scale that nobody knows or cares when they get murdered. A tragedy multiplied many times over when you consider that the Police genuinely couldn't care less. As for the film.... it didn't seem to be taking us anywhere in particular or getting to any point. Needed some investigation into those 12 missing years and into the Police. Just because they say they wont be interviewed doesnt mean you can't examine their actions.
