As the opening credits rolled and I saw John Alton was the cinematographer, I got very excited. The excitement wore off three minutes later. Most of this movie plays out like an episode of "Leave It to Beaver", moralistic ending and all. There is very little noir about any of this. However, Alton's photography is truly stunning, far far better than this film deserves. I guess if you have no noir expectations and a high tolerance level for irritating children, it's worth a watch.

This is it, this is the worst "noir." The only redeeming quality is like 3 minutes of beautiful cinematography towards the end (after an hour of mediocrity) and, uh, that maybe the film's attitude towards strangers is not quite as reprehensible as it first appears. For that we have to deal with an hour of an unbearably whiny and self righteous child going on and on about his damn dog. Needless to say the acting in the film is awful, with no exceptions. The writing is terrible as well.

When a stray dog that Billy Gray has just adopted as his own is found poisoned in front of his new neighbor's house, Gray launches a vendetta against the surly, secretive man. Though he has no proof of his guilt, he declares to everyone in town that he knows the man did it. It all leads to the near ruination of his father and most of the town. A strange, but moderately appealing Red Scare allegory told mostly from a child's perspective. Nancy Reagan plays Gary's mom.

Decent little movie, and Billy Gray proved again what a great child actor he was. Bud from Father Knows Best, when he was fairly young. The movie combines a family theme with a mystery, action and drama. All in just over an hour!

Intriguing little film. A mysterious neighbor, a overly emotional kid and a dog. On one hand, it didn't seem like the film knew what it wanted to be, yet the mix it brought made it unique. Didn't find it's audience when it was released, making it a money loser for MGM, but many have found it since and adored it. It's cute, with a blurred sense of danger, but for me it lacks a little to make it truly special.
