If Tank Girl were a superhero, her x-power would be making unfunny penis jokes in a voice reminiscent of a squeaky dog toy.

20 points for the stuntwoman surfing on the tank's gun & 10 for Watts being very easy to watch, but the rest of this is AWFUL. It's likely all of this would be far more tolerable as a wild Bakshi-like cartoon bc the imagery would carry the day, but this is basically Bugs Bunny in an R-rated world of interspecies humping, incest jokes, profanity, & threats of rape & pedophilia. Tonally bipolar, the film has Bugs insuring that nothing is at stake while wanting us to care when a good character dies

For a split second this movie turned me into a lesbian cyber-punk rocker. Unfortunately, it's so cracked out and the nonsense is so unrelenting you can't help but give up. I feel kind of dirty. I don't know, this thing is a mess. It's fun but sickly. I'm confused. Why can't this be good? Maybe I should read the comics.

It's kind of entertaining in a wacky, cheesy way on its own, but the fact that it doesn't really resemble the comics drags it down. The insane animated segments are great, which seem to be the only way to capture the essence of the comics. Basically means that FLCL is as close as we'll get to the style Tank Girl should be presented in.

A muddled attempt to transfer the British comic strip by Alan Martin and Jamie Hewlett to the screen. It is all flash and no substance or narrative, lacking in imagination and presenting a future that is more familiar than most pasts; brief cartoon interludes suggest that an animated approach might have been more successful.

Tank Girl exemplifies what happens when a film doesn't have a singular, unified vision. One can feel all the points when someone ripped something out and replaced it with something inferior. Eventually I just found myself feeling sorry for Lori Petty having to think of something edgy to scream every five seconds. The film just has so many ideas and so little attention paid to cohesion and consistency. The laughably dated production design doesn't help. I liked the soundtrack, though.

I haven't read the comics and probably never will, but this movie on its own merits is terrible. It builds up to a somewhat moody atmosphere but then decides to be wacky, stupid, annoying and unfunny in every conceivable way. Like, what? The movie feels like it's really inconsistent which is made much worse by its insufferable protagonist and how much an incoherent mess the whole package is.

It's not downright awful but it's pretty close. So many points in the movie are just flat out stupid and unfunny. There are the occasional glimmers of entertainment though and I did honestly enjoy the animated comic segments. But almost everything else was just garbage.

"Tank Girl" is a by no means some underappreciated masterpiece, not in the slightest, but it's harmless, campy, inventive, and mind-bogglingly surreal fun that absolutely refuses to cater to anyone who happens to be out of the loop, which sadly happened to be just about every member of the moviegoing audience at the time. It's not without its faults, but "Tank Girl" is nothing if not unique.

Bubblegum pop-punk Mad Max. Bears a lot of stylistic and tonal similarity to other mid to low budget 90s studio sci-fi. Totally didn't expect to find this, but Lori Petty's performance here is clearly an ENORMOUS influence on Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn. It's kind of dumb and almost obnoxiously twee, but it's totally fun if you can turn your brain off for a while. Also Ice-T is a... kangaroo-man? This is probably the sort of thing that's considered a travesty by fans of the original comic.

This flashy film version of the Martin-Hewlett comic character really tanked at the B.O. but it's not that bad. The direction of Talalay (_Freddy's Dead_, _Ghost in the Machine_) lacks the light touch this sort of thing requires but the cast does its best to hold your interest. Favorite exchange: McDowell: "How does it feel knowing you're about to die?" Petty: "You tell me!"

It's like a feminist Australian Johnny Mnemonic. In other words: totally my shit. I really dig the multimedia mash-up wavelength it's operating on, particularly the animated sequences (purportedly used as fill-ins when the budget was insufficient, but nonetheless an awesome change of pace). And I fuckin' love Lori Petty.

A cult classic if there ever was one. Such an oddity even for the era, to the point where its mere existence is actually pretty baffling. That being said, there are things to like: Ice T as a kangaroo. Lori Petty having the time of her life. Naomi Watts being Naomi Watts. The undeniable feminist & counter-culture overtones. The potentially LGBTQ undertones. The sheer originality. But sadly, all of those things are jammed into a movie that's so poorly written it just never really works.

Truly, this movie is just strange. We get everything from bizarre, over-the-top scenes, to dances, to massive killing, all wrapped in truly odd dialogue. Tank Girl and Jet Girl make a terrific combination, but this movie is just not meant to be taken seriously. NOBODY takes the plot seriously - the entire cast knows how wierd this looks and continually seem to provide meta-comments to that effect.

Malcolm McDowell is in charge of the Red Ribbon Army which is locked in a war with a group of about 6 half kangaroo half human things created by some guy because I guess he played too much Tekken. Meanwhile, Lori Petty plays a low IQ version of Cyndi Lauper whose negligence on guard duty causes her housemates to all get shot up. Her breathtaking idiocy also means her friend little girl keeps getting kidnapped. Anyway, this movie is really dumb and the only redeeming factor is Naomi Watts.

It wants to be a cult movie so bad. And it is, so bad. But as hangover movies go at least it's better than Ivanhoe. Rewatch: Honestly, the first half is a ton of anarchic fun. But the joke gets old and the finale drags. There's a reason most great punk albums are less than 40 minutes.

Wildly entertaining, throw-everything-into-the-blender actioner has the look of 90s mainstream action/sci-fi (DEMOLTION MAN and JUDGE DREDD inspired and inspiring) and elevated by a fun, whackadoo performance from Petty (Margot Robbie somewhere is furiously taking notes). A certain unevenness of tone is to be expected, and the action finale is too rudimentary, but has a nice feel for its gritty, dystopic world; a flamboyant McDowell seems to be having a ball as the “Talking Killer” deluxe!

This movie is just a complete overload. It's got too much horny (so much of it bound up in threats of sexual assault), too many lingering shots of torture, too many rapid cuts, too many theoretically-wacky jokes. I respect that they put a female character fully in the "action protagonist" role in 1995, and let her fight and have someone fridged for her and be sexually forward. But Tank Girl by herself is almost too much, and cramming in everything else makes the whole experience *far* too much.

I'm not putting Tank Girl in the red because it was an attempt to do something slightly different with a comic book adaptation, despite its obvious pandering to the 'grunge' generation. Petty was well cast in the title role, and there are some neat visual flourishes, but the script is a mess, and the one liners fall flat. The action packed finale is OK, but it's all attitude with no perspective that tries way too hard to be 'cool' and cute rather than sexy and subversive.

In 1995 the first wave of Comic Book based movies is mercifully coming to an end. Into this mix we have the adaptation of Tank Girl. Brutally honest? Lori Petty is terribly miscast in this Grrrl power meets Mad Max meets 1984. Ice-T's growling can't save this and Malcolm McDowell mails in his laughingly bad villain. What is good is the overall aesthetic of the film and the comic book feel to the film that director Rachel Talalay achieved.

Lori Petty is fucking perfect as Tank Girl and watching Malcolm McDowell ham it up is also fun. All the shit with the Kangaroos is so freaking lame. Shares some similarities with the comic, but isn't nearly as much of a thrill ride, it's far more campy and lighthearted. Ends pretty flat but there are some really good things mixed in with the bad. I would say the humor falls flat most of the time. It's not long and retains enough of what I like about Tank Girl to be watchable.
