I'm not really sure what I just watched, or how much I enjoyed actually it. The film certainly has it's (freakin' weird) moments. But, overall the writing is weak and the plot is slate; which is at odds with the leads, who are quite engaging. Honestly, my score would be lower if the film's core messages weren't so in line with my own guiding principles - 1) never do creative work for free (or for "exposure") and 2) soul music is awesome. Also, extra points for Cusack's ridiculous mustache.

Apparently this movie had a $10 Million budget. This is one of those cases where they spent it all on hookers and blow, right?

Exactly the film I expect a Punk music video director to make.

The more style you put out there the lesser the chance of success. It's not perfect, but I love what it tries, and I wish Hollywood had the stones to release something like this today

Feels as low-budget and guerilla as the tapes in the movie. But that extends to the writing and story and the jokes as much it does the production value. I flinched through the whole thing.

I still enjoy Tapeheads but it's not really laugh-out-loud funny, just kind of quirky and silly. Hasn't dated well, either... I can't imagine anyone liking this who isn't a child of the 80's.
