Minor epic is still a lot of fun, with Brynner and Curtis clearly relishing their larger-than-life roles (and as father and son (!!!) no less!). Always a frustratingly uneven director, Thompson here manages the fine balancing act of spectacle on a budget, while ensuring the performances are never lost or overwhelmed.

Big period war movie surrounding a romeo-and-juliet-style romance. Entirely formulaic and highly contrived, and rife with images of bare-chested Cossacks playing together which gives it an unintended homosexual air.

It's a very good movie adaptated from a brilliant novel. Nikolai Gogol makes some political and cultural suggestions. Cossacks, war and among them, there is a beautiful love story.

A very enjoyable classic adventure movie. Yul Brynner is great fun to watch in the title role, Waxman's score is legendary. Script drags in the final third. All in all, a fun ride, but not to be taken seriously.
