Tears of the Sun (2003)

Bruce Willis stars as Lt. A.K. Waters, the loyal veteran officer of a Navy S.E.A.L unit. When he's sent into the heart of Africa, the usually hard-bitten Waters finds himself deeply conflicted at having to choose between following orders and the dictates of his own conscience. (Sony)

Maybe it's time to reassess my life, but I'm happy this movie exists if only because it put Monica Bellucci and Bruce Willis together on screen. It says very little about my self worth, but the thought of them getting together is aesthetically pleasing. She's numbers one, two and three on my most attractive females list, and he's numbers one, three, and six on my list of the coolest people (for the record, Fassbender is numbers two, four and five).

Military action thriller where Willis is (not surprisingly) playing a superbadass special forces guy. The entire plot stinks of white man's burden and is also a thinly veiled jingoistic simplification of real foreign policy. If you just enjoy predictable action movies that mindlessly flag wave I guess this serves its purpose. It has less depth than a Call of Duty game or a recruitment video. The production value is polished and it's not boring so I can't say it has no redeeming value.

Underatted war movie. The sequence in which the SEALS take out a whole plattoon in stealth mode makes all grown men wish they'd joined special forces.

Well-made action film bears a message that doing the right thing isn't a political decision but a humanist one. Undermined more than once by awkward dialogue and miscasting of the very sexy Bellucci.

Maybe if Willis squinted just a little more the movie would get interesting.

Has it finished? That is the question you will ask yourself in a picture where you wait and wait, and wait a little more for something to happen.

The story of how a rough and war-torn veteran once again finds his concious. The action isn't very well edited and thus it really loses it's "action movie" edge. The plot isn't anything special or interesting and, as such, isn't able to carry the movie. Monica Bellucci is hot though. So that's a plus.

The groundwork to this movie is okay, but everything is completely underdeveloped. By the end of the movie all of the conclusions to the dramatic arcs feel completely unearned.

Failed to meet my expectations of being mediocre and slightly entertaining.

Overall, not bad. But I found myself rolling my eyes an awful lot. If you're a big Bruce Willis fan, a war movie nut, or just really need to see Monica Bellucci, watch it, otherwise, you'll be disappointed.

This is definately one of Antoine Fuqua's better jobs as a director. The strangest part about it is when you hear about how much effort went into the script. When they talk about making the movie they talk about shining a light on all of the long running African genocide politics, but this movie simply isn't about that, it's about a man learning to let himself feel, to care about something other than getting the job done. So he begins to care about the genocide stuff? No, he has a crush o

A pleasing action-war film, not Willis' best, but certainly one of his better efforts of recent memory.

An entertaining war film that really doesn't do anything. Though not bad, most of the movie ends up being forgettable.

Simplistic, but, at the end someone has to answer the question, "Who listens to the crying in Africa?" The plight of millions of ordinary Africans is terrible and it is largely being ignored. The movie makes you think about it.

Flawed, but effective battle film. It seems a director's cut would be more effective, but Willis is still in good form and there is a good amount of tension and style.

It is always the same story, the American hero saving to pretty little girl. But is not so bad.

The atrocities in Africa around which the film is centred are well depicted, suitably shocking and thought provoking but the plot is weak and frankly rather unbelievable. It's typically Holywood and not in a good way with heroic American soldiers running upright towards the enemy spraying bullets, outrageous !!

Thank God there are a bunch of American soldiers all over the World. Who else has the courage to save us except them?

While not a actual base on a true story movie, it does show what does happen in these places. It is an inpactful movie

This is another one of those films where the primary objective of the film is to convey that it's really a wonderful thing when the white people save the black people from themselves.

Tears of the Sun is a really good movie about a rescue mission involving some people from Nigeria. It's about as basic as you can get, and yet, I was fully engrossed while it was playing. It works because it isn't just a simple action movie, and because it doesn't feel like it cheats you out of scenes involving these soldiers. You feel just like one of the people being rescued, being fully immersed in everything taking place. It's not perfect, but it's very entertaining.

Some fairly brutal scenes are played out but nothing has the impact it should because its all fairly white washed and heartless.

"An imminent favorite at the White House screening room, but the film is ultimately so dry and remote that one can't imagine Chaney or Ashcroft trooping through all the exposition and moral finagling to get to the carnage." - Chuck Rudolph

Sometimes gut wrenching account of a Navy S.E.A.L rescue of an American aid worker from Nigeria ravaged by war & ethnic cleaning. Monica Bellucci was amazing. Bruce Willis & the other soldiers were also excellent. Akosua Busia was a brief standout. Tons of war action, gun fights, snipers, blood, death & gore. Many tense & heartbreaking moments. Excellent performances, production quality, music & SFX. Simple but memorable story. Overall very satisfying, but how did they not run out of ammo?

Arriving just in time for the impending invasion of Iraq, Antoine Fuqua's Tears Of The Sun presents a full-blown fantasy of positive U.S. military intervention overseas, with honorable and heroic soldiers protecting Nigerian refugees from certain slaughter. But it's missing an important disclaimer: None of it actually happened.
