It's as unbalanced and muddled as an anthology like this must feel. Really, though, how many dreams can you remember from other people that were worth listening to? Dreams 6 & 10 end up being the most successful on the sole virtue of not taking itself at all seriously (especially true for the dementia of 6). The rest are average fare, most being too short to really build to anything remarkable, some that probably wouldn't mean much more as a feature. Dream 7 is absolute trash.

Omnibus films and movies about dreams are both areas that can be problematic. But the two ideas work quite well together. There honestly isn't a bad segment here. The ones by Jissoji and Nishikawa are a little bland, but only in comparison to the others. The dreams run the gamut from strange to funny to gross to scary to tender. The concept allows all the directors to flex their stylistic muscles, and the results are wildly imaginative and often quite beautiful. This was a really nice surprise.

The quality ranges, but a lot of nice surprises. Definitely wasn't expecting an animated short by Amano.
