Several people disappear from and at the sea. Their bodies are found gnawed to the skeleton, even the marrow is missing. The scientists have no idea which animal could do such things. Dr. Turner begins to suspect that the company which builds a tunnel beneath the bay might have poisoned the environment and caused an octopus to mutate to giant dimensions. Just at the same time a great sailing regatta with many children is started - among them Turner's nephew Tommy. (imdb)

A tough yet sensitive marine biologist (Bo Hopkins) joins forces with a wily and grizzled journalist (John Huston) to battle a ravenous giant squid (average-sized octopus). It starts out well, with the first kill in the film being a small human child, but the movie squanders most of that considerable good will by being too long and much too badly edited.

In the wake of "Jaws"(1975), giant killer animal movies like "Grizzly"(1976), "Orca"(1977), and "Piranha"(1978), rose from the depths of film studios in quick attempts to cash-in somehow off Spielberg's blockbuster success. Here "Tentacles"(1977) is no different in that regard. However despite the few flashes of fun tentacle destruction or the minor efforts from the film's big-name stars, there is nothing here to salvage this boring shipwreck of a film to warrant diving down to watch.

Possibly the most boring film I've seen

As blatant Jaws ripoffs go, this is probably a more competent film than, say, The Last Shark - probably thanks to so many actual actors being on set (for whatever reason). But the editors still manage to sink the movie by making it interminably boring. For every minute of actual calamari action, you get ten of people awkwardly standing around listening to organ muzak, presumably waiting for the director to roll camera. Legend has it they're still waiting.

This is a bad film. The script has a lot of scenes with very boring dialogue. There are a number of scenes that drag on and go nowhere. The sequences were the giant Octopus attacks people look terrible. Overall this movie is a complete mess.

The film "Tentacles" embraces the aesthetic of a 1970s catastrophe film, starring a group of seasoned Hollywood actors past their prime. The storyline is a weak imitation of Jaws and fails to entertain, as many subplots lack clear direction. Witnessing these actors struggling to stay afloat in this plot is painful.

Hard to rate but thankfully weirder than it needs to be, the underwater stuff looks good, and the music is a treat. Boat race scene a highlight. Also lots of one of my favorite B-movie hallmarks, really shaky helicopter shots. Bring those back!
