Absolutely magnificent. I think it is propelled by the same neuroses that informed Polanski's previous work - Feelings of entrapment, paranoia, sexual and emotional frustration and abuse, broken familial bonds. Tess is more about graceful sorrow than it is the sorts of messy, claustrophobic terror that characterized Polanski's earlier masterpieces, but ultimately just as haunting, and still highly personal, fraught with echoes of his tumultuous past, of Sharon Tate and of Samantha Gailey.

A sumptuous, anonymous version of a classic. This is Polanski on his good behavior, Polanski trying to hide.
