Robert Altman's sadly neglected film that, along with his later "Images", fits into the unconventional psycho-thriller mold. A bizarre story with Sandy Dennis as a spinster who takes in a handsome young man (Michael Burns) who is pretending to be mute. She imprisons the boy and supplies his every need, including a prostitute (Luana Anders), whom she goes out and brings home for Burns' pleasure. (imdb)

A sadly neglected early Robert Altman film. It's hard for me to say too much about it because the quality of my copy is so bad, but Sandy Dennis is really great in it.

Up to the third act I enjoyed this, it felt quite real, but it took a weird turn that I felt came out of nowhere, and not in a good way, so it lost points there. The transfer was also of an inferior quality, so that didn't help; fuzzy images, even fuzzier, almost indistinct sound. Desperately needs a remaster.

Fascinatingly textured early Altman flick, half character study and half psychological thriller. Sandy Dennis is incredible - time has been kind to her acting style, most likely because we're now so inundated with twitchy/affected UK actors that she seems naturalistic in contrast.

A good slow-burning psychological thriller with an outstanding Sandy Dennis in the lead as a lonely woman who takes in what she thinks is a homeless young man. Altman shows a great eye for tracking and framing. There is one marvelous track from the outside of a house following a character moving up each floor.

The film has slow, subtle buildup, but it lacks some depth and it takes too much time to get into the finale (which was nice, but expected).
