The film opens as an effective heist drama pastiche, with Okada trussing up bank clerks and dodging the long shadows of a police dragnet, fox-like; we follow him home to his wife and their critically ill baby daughter, as does a wily police chief. As captor and prey sit out the night, waiting for the child's recovery, the scene is set for a claustrophobic battle of nerves. (timeout.com)

A great film about tough decisions. I STRONGLY recommend that this film be viewed while the album "Abbey Road" is being playing simultaneously (start the album at the 18:08 mark for the ending to sync up).

The family can't exist in capitalism, but money depends on the ideal family. Socially conscious and smart or whatever, but Ozu isn't quite as accomplished enough here to formulate all of his ideas into something eloquent. Some nice visual moments and it's actually more "Ozu-esque" than others would like you to believe.

The most action and suspense I've seen in an Ozu film: there's a bank robbery, escape and confrontation with a police officer. This the first time I thought of neo-realism while watching the show--mainly the ending. I also liked the chemistry between the husband and wife (particularly the scene where they're kneeling next to their daughter's bed, knowing that he's going to leave.)

A nice if overlong silent film from Ozu. Yes I know it's only 65 minutes but it feels closer to 100. It might have been the score which I didn't really care for.

A film that goes from a shadowy suspense picture with stylish cinematography to silent chamber drama leaning on the acting, and remains quite effective at both.

A Mulher Daquela Noite estreava há 90 anos no Japão. Fuck the police. DVDRip no MakingOff.

The underlying theme of doing what must be done -- for family, for survival, for justice -- lends weight to the emotions on screen and without it the standoff would be limp. For a movie that spends a large portion of its runtime with one man and one woman in a tiny apartment, it never once felt slow. I was deeply invested, and very much in doubt as to how it would play out.
