The subject matter is ripe for common noir themes like the fragility of civilized society and the darkness lurking beneath pleasant facades. Every performance is quite good, especially Rennie and Darnell. The film keeps you guessing and keeps you interested, never playing a hand too soon. Although my copy was rather blurry, I could still appreciate the artful framing and use of light. The score is the weakest aspect, often laying on the strings too thick. Otherwise, quite a fine film.

"Do you think these dysfunctional personalities are essential to film noir?" "Absolutely!" http://illusionpodcast.blogspot.com/2014/11/episode-36-films-noir-of-otto-preminger.html

A much lesser remake of the French classic Le corbeau (1943). Even when handled by someone as competent as Otto Preminger, it doesn't shake off feeling like a B-movie, and certainly lack the atmosphere of the original. With that said, it's a intriguing story, and it does tell it quite well. And I must admit I didn't recognize Charles Boyer with the beard and old man look. Cool to see him like that.
