Fun to watch, and it also seems like it was fun to make - not in the sense of a bunch of idiots mugging for the camera without direction (a la most Adam Sandler movies), but in that someone wrote a deceptively smart script full of sharp dialogue, called friends who knew how to treat such a script, and assembled a genuinely funny sex comedy.

Some pretty good laughs here, good cast and good pacing. Nothing especially worth coming back to, but I didn't feel like it was a waste of time either. I liked how it avoided some intensely awkward situations by having characters actually making smart decisions.

It's not hilarious throughout, but it's very, very funny, and there are more than a few gut-busters. And the characters aren't cardboard cutouts - they're all fleshed out very well and show emotion and depth. The ending is fantastic, completely caught me off guard and made me burst out laughing. The extended cut is a bit bloated, though. A great first effort, and a damn good movie.

Surprisingly deep characters for a sex comedy, the film manages to balance some laugh out loud visual comedy with clever dialogue, while maintaining an engaging narrative and sympathetic leads. Needs tighter editing, though, and the unrated edition, though it has some funny moments, overall detracts from the flow of the movie.

The astonishingly innocent undercurrent of the tone of this movie is captured perfectly in a scene that I can't recall is in the theatrical or unrated cut or if it's actually a deleted scene but after an interrupted sexual experience he calls the Viagra hotline because (despite not taking the pill) they tell you to call if you have an erection lasting more than four hours. The nature of this is very Eddie Murphy but presented in a Bill Cosby (pre rape allegations) way. Well done.

The funny moments are outweighed by just truly how pathetic Carell's character is. If you're a 40 year old virgin you are not this chipper and not this in shape. It's so detached from reality it's just bizarre. Judd Apatow's view of the world is so strange and unsettling

Charming comedy is way above the quality of typical gross-out teen comedy fare. This one has heart, and that's what elevates it above all the rest. Sex humor gets a little much at times.

Hilarious movie, and it's one of those comedies that's funnier than most comedies because it has a realness to it. Nothing is funnier than actual situations that occur, and this movie feels like you're witnessing just that. I also really admire that the movie felt the need to take a risk and put the message out that pretty much glorifies the idea of people waiting for sex. Although Carell's character is funny, you never once look down on him.

Catherine Keener is great and there are some genuinely funny scenes. However, the film doesn't really have consistent characters that exist outside of their parts in the bits, and is slightly offensive in how prude it is about sex. To this film, every form of sex is absolutely disgusting and intolerable except for that inside marriage, which makes a man go from being 100% impossible to arouse into a total sex being. It just doesn't work.

The painfully shy and awkward but extremely well-meaning Andy is a totally relatable protagonist, and tossing him into a twisted world of sexual, profane ribaldry is a genius recipe for maximum comedy. Also, I want to marry Catherine Keener and treat her right forever. Watch the theatrical cut instead of the unrated edition though - the extra 17 minutes poison the pacing.

I thought this was going to be some stupid movie about Steve Carell trying to get laid for 2 hours. I guess I should have realized that Steve Carell is not Dane Cook and his movies will be written with both intelligence and subtlety. It's truly a great comedy that only works because the writing and acting are spot on and believable. The only real complaint I had was when he yells "Kelly Clarkson" during the chest waxing scene. I still don't understand why that's supposed to be funny.

While couched in the disguise of a juvenile raunch comedy, this is at its heart a warm hearted and compassionate tale, sparked by a perfectly pitched (and lovable) lead turn from Carell, backed by great support from Apatow's usual stock company; gives equal time to developing Keener as a fully rounded, believable character in her own right. Because of the inherent honesty, the sometimes outlandishly vulgar comic set pieces work very well (especially Mann's hilarious car ride).

Very enjoyable romantic comedy about a middle-aged virgin on a journey towards 'doing it' through the questionable efforts of his co-workers. Steve Carell is definitely the best actor here, but the others are all entertaining as well with no "God, you're so annoying"-characters as quite often happens in these kind of comedies. Visually it's not very interesting and I don't remember anything of the soundtrack, but the story itself is engaging and funny enough to make for a pleasant film.

It definitely has its funny moments and Carell was surprisingly effective in the lead, but the movie mainly holds together thanks to the supporting cast. I apparently don't mind Rudd or Rogen in more manageable portions. Still, it's surprisingly long, can't maintain momentum, and of course has to end in the most perfect way possible. And making a man get rid of his nerdy shit? DUDE, NOT COOL!

i like apatow's work, i really do. I like the spontaneity of the dialogues, i like the neurotic characters, the mopey heart broken dudes, the whole nine yards. But there's always an element to the plot, this eerie conservative puritan undertone, that fucks up the whole vibe of the movie in the end. 40 year old virgin has its moments, there are some true gems in the dialogues and the characters click. unfortunately the story takes a trip to mundaneville towards the end, and retires there.

Judd Apatow and Steve Carrell bring a surprising depth and charm to the love story in this romantic sex comedy. The trademark Apatow improve style is on full display here with an amazing cast of comedic actors. However, not relentlessly hilarious the movie has enough laughs and genuinely memorable moments to elevate a well written story to one of the more memorable romantic comedies of the new millennium.

Steve Carell's coming out party. Supporting roles in Bruce Almighty and Anchorman gave us glimpses, his years on The Daily Show showed us his comic genius, and he's finally gets his chance to show his muscles in this movie, and he gets the knockout for sure. Great supporting cast helps immensely. Can't wait to see his big screen adaptation of Get Smart and Evan Almighty.

Extremely enjoyable. Very funny, but there is something missing that I can't quite finger. Perhaps it is that all the jokes are about sex, but that's what it's about. Carell and Rogen are wonderful and Apatow is a god. Knocked Up is far superior though. Cathrine Keener's daughter in the movie is really hot.

Considering the cast and the premise of the plot, I felt the movie as a whole was a let down. The team of characters have been invovled in many funny movies together and the writing presents a plot that had much more potential than what seemed to shine through.

Steve Correl is wonderfully funny in this film about sex. Correl is a 40 year old virgin, but not from lack of trying. Bad luck has made him into the sweet, but innocent man he is at the start of the movie. This movie will have you laughing till the credits. Not for the faint of heart though, obviously filled with crude humor.

Apatow's first directorial effort is still his best. He does the male ritual of savagely cutting one's counterparts better than anyone. Carrell's plight is dealt with with surprising compassion even while existing within some great gross-out scenes. Particularly memorable is Apatow's wife Leslie Mann in a spectacularly funny cameo as a drunk looking for a hook-up ("I want some fucking Freeeench toast.")

I went in expecting a derivitive comedy, but found myself enjoying it more than I would have predicted. You'd expect the situational comedy and the slightly edgy humour, but coupled with some great characters and sometimes thoughtful scripting it works really well. It's slower than many similar movies leaving the jokes feeling more spread out, making up for this by hitting hard when the humour does crop up.
