The 4:30 Movie

With its simple premise, setting and style, it's an attempt to recapture his indie beginnings, but it feels a little tired, especially after Clerks 3 mined some similar territory thematically. This does feel genuine, obviously, and I can't fault Smith for that, but I didn't feel a ton and I didn't laugh much. What bothers me the most is how awkward a bunch of the dialogue is, which is what Smith always excels at. Breezy and charming enough to be entertaining but disappointing as a Smith fan.

The premise is fine, and I appreciate Smith putting himself out there to some extent. I'm disappointed in the writing more than anything. The dialogue and the jokes fall utterly flat far too often.

Better than Clerks 3 and the Jay and Silent Bob sequel, but the acting is uneven and the writing is weak, relying too heavily on 'ironic' jokes about future predictions that never materialised and lazy banter that lacks the rhythm and nerve of Clerks and Mallrats. Agudong is incredibly charming as the cute girl next door, and Smith does create some nostalgia for the old pre-multiplex movie going experience. What it lacks is a sense of significance beyond Smith's adolescent mindset.
