One of the biggest complaints I hear about this movie aside for the length is the lack of action. It's true that there is absolutely no action in this movie at all and it's true that this is almost four hours long but I also found that this movie never gets boring and manages to be gripping and compelling throughout. I agree with a lot of others in that I would've liked to have seen the 47 in action but I know that it doesn't fit the tone of the movie and would've felt out of place.

It was strangely intriguing for a long time, but then the film made the unacceptable decision to *not* show the central event that the characters were working towards. - Very unsatisfying, but overall still recommended.

Kenji Mizoguchi epic adaptation of The 47 Ronin (1941) is pure serious drama. Surprisingly unspectacular. But that might be the appeal of this version of the famous tale. Taking a backseat away from the battles and focusing on the indoor politics and feelings of those involved in the conflict. With that said, I would have preferred a action packed adaptation to Mizoguchi's economical vision.

Fascinatingly flawed. Has more grown men crying than an LA bar after the Lakers lose. And the plot is, literally, Japanese decorum. That's it. That's why characters wait for vengeance, plot it, quarrel, talk - in that respect it's brilliant, but naturally unfeeling. The cinematography is something to behold, and the full reason to stick it through its 4-hour runtime.

The pacing, compositions and cinematography are just as solid, beautiful, and graceful (respectively) as anything Mizoguchi ever made. Still, I was underwhelmed. The story and its structure felt completely rote and uninspired.

From a stylistic standpoint, I haven't seen Mizoguchi out-class this - the camera movements are inspired. Unfortunately, the narrative plods along at a middling pace with little incentive for you to finish it.

Mizoguchi's version of this oft-filmed story seems to focus almost entirely on the politics of the situation and the samurai code, and feels very cold and inhuman. However, in the last hour of the movie it gains a spark of humanity that almost redeems the first three hours. It was commissioned to inspire a sense of loyalty, but to me the effect is quite the opposite -- in this film, the samurais and their code of honor seem foolish. Overall, a disappointment.
