It's like that episode of Black Mirror everyone hated...but all the actors have better hair. YA science once again rears its ugly head in the shape of EMPs that not only permanently shut down all machinery ever made, but all machinery yet to be made, as no one in the world attempts to build another engine, radio, or mechanical pencil after their current ones die. Watching the 5th Wave is like watching Carly Rae Jepsen's Call Me Maybe video, except after the EMP, there would be no calling. Maybe.

The 5th Wave feels like every young adult movie of the last decade crushed up into a two-hour TV pilot. After it faded to black, I expected "Coming soon to CBS" to appear on the screen. It's all setup - building toward a sequel that we very well may never get. And even if we are "treated" with a second one, The 5th Wave is so dull that it's hard to imagine many people caring. Bad acting, very little plot, no originality, and not even enough action or thrills to distract us from all its flaws. [Full Review]

**SMALL SPOILER ALERT** A poor shot at yet another young adult novel. The clichés where close to painful. "That was the last normal day of my life" - "I choose YOU" - "Love is NOT a trick", oh and apparently the aliens have the ability to inhabit human host AND Liev Schreiber is a bad guy. What a shocker! The list goes on... *Bad

Chloe Grace Moretz was a treat, but the writing was poor & seemed to get worse as it progressed. A few others in the cast stood out. Some obvious & tedious plot twists. A few OK CGI moments, but humans as aliens was cheap. Excellent music & production quality. A couple of good action scenes. The story was left unfinished, presumably for a sequel that's not warranted. Many good moments but the overall story failed to be engaging, immersive, believable or satisfying.

When the apocalypse does eventually come, I'm going to hide out in either a laundrette or a cosmetics factory, because apparently even after 90% of the world's population have been killed by various waves of terrible, everyone will still be perfectly made up and wearing freshly laundered clothes. The fact that I was pondering this, rather than paying any attention to a bunch of bland, interchangeable teenagers refuse to act, tells you everything you need to know about this piece of crap.

Spoilers: So Moretz looks out her window and sees her savior chopping wood and then sees his chiseled physique as he bathes in the lake, splashing water on himself... ahhh, I get it, I'm watching porn. One of the worst love stories in recent memory, and it helps tank an otherwise somewhat interesting movie. Up until a certain point I was into it mildly, even though most of the actors -- including Moretz who I love -- phoned it in. But then it went down badly and I just wanted it to be over.

Through just two movies (this & The Forest), 2016 is shaping up to be one of the worst years on record. I know January is usually bad but damn. I want to say it's too short, but that might sound like I wanted it to go on longer. Things just needed more time. The "twist" is so paper-thin that it all but smacks you in the lips within the first 30 minutes. I dug Cassie & Evan's dynamic to a point, until it became clear that it was just "pair them up because teenagers". I'm told the book is good...

Ugggh. The direction and dialog are pretty horrendous. I actually like the concept, the initial apocalypse scenes are decent, and Chloe Grace Moretz tries, but it doesn't amount to much. An annoying attempt at copying the popularity of other YA novels.

It descends into formulaic, unsatisfying cliché after about an hour--but that first hour's undeniably pretty muscular and involving, effectively documenting the alien apocalypse through Moretz's increasingly freaked-out point of view. If it had just stuck with that--one scared teenage girl alone in alien territory, trying to find her brother--it'd have been awesome. But it devolves into a DIVERGENT ripoff eventually, which turns out to be a drag.

New rule: If you've mastered intergalactic travel but can't even manage to take over Ohio without the aid of whiny teenagers, all other space aliens get to stand around and point tentacles and laugh at you.

The same sorts of things are not being said about the movie. While it has some interesting twists to it, this cinematic rendition feels a wee bit tired--a "me too" addition to already second-string YA post-apocalyptic franchises such as The Maze Runner and Divergent. Indeed, the main way The 5th Wave stands out from its cinematic cohorts is, sadly, through its problematic content. (pluggedin.com)

Moretz is a good actress and the alien invasion is done in fairly new ways with seemingly some thought put behind it, so why is it so easy to lose interest in this narrative so quickly? Mainly because the characters never feel like characters but like generic archetypes plucked off the Hunger Games' knock-off rack. Moretz is the standard strong-minded heroine w/ a moppet sibling who only exists to motivate her, who'll have 2 choose between a Hunkbot & a 1st Crush. Its all too derivative

There was one moment of the 5th Wave where I thought, "this might start to get interesting," but then it didn't. Everything here is pretty awful and been done better before, including the same old tsunami scene you've seen hundreds of times by now.

There is almost nothing original about this YA entry. I do like the lead, but man this was boring and silly and badly made.

An entertaining alien invasion movie. If the unnecessary (and unbelievable) romance was removed it would have been much stronger. As it is, it's still better than Divergent (2014) or The Maze Runner (2014).

Could have been alright had it not tried to market itself so hard like a pilot for a franchise loaded with stuff ripped off of other franchises.

It starts off with a little action, then cuts to sappy drama, then a little action then back again to drama. If they just kept the action going it might be worthwhile, or failing that make it a drama about the post-apocalypse instead it's just deadly boring

Nothing connects me to the story, there are many places I should feel emotion, but it never happens. Even the action scenes with their special effects are a boor. The ending is awkward and stilted, too much talent for such weak film.

5th Wave is filmed like a polished high budget music video, and acted with the same enthusiasm. Though I like Moretz, her male counterpart is basically Mark from The Room, and the rest of the cast is blatantly bad at acting. Not to mention the script is horrible. It's potentially one of the worst movies I'll see this year, propped up that it's not only bad, but also disappointing.

Despite this movie getting really poor reviews it actually wasn't awful. It's getting too much hate I think, despite having some pretty cool scenes along with an interesting premise that possibly sets up a sequel. I look forward to more.
