Aesthetics play an important role both thematically and visually in The 9th Life of Louis Drax; a film that is intriguing to watch yet deeply flawed. Platt is great as usual. Paul is middling. Dornan struggles until he gets to take his shirt off (he's not that bad). Longworth (or at least his character) is obnoxious. Gadon seemed to only be cast for her looks, and at times it feels as if she thinks she's in a mid-century period piece. The twist is over-played, but there're decent moments within.

Poor script and annoying characters. Aaron Paul is the only decent thing about this film, together with the seaweed monster costume.

Just one good scene here -- doc and psycho mom kiss, boy wakes up looking at them -- in a fantasy mistery that starts promising, gets predictable and ends in such a lame fashion -- a session in which the doc, serving as a vessel for the kid in coma, tells the whole secret about the overprotector mom and the caring foster dad.

Better than I had expected from the synopsis. I haven't read the book. I have seen and liked Aja's movies Abre Los Ojos, Mirrors and The Hills Have Eyes. This one was a bit more like De Palma. Like Dressed to Kill. And I liked that feel a lot. Expert writing, direction, shooting, editing and acting. Cinematography was very good, a nice "sunlight after the rain" glow which must have been influenced by Janusz Kaminski. Not quite as good as Kaminski, but still good. A quite satisfying movie.

Interesting psychological mystery but the book made for a better read.

Maybe after this one with Aja going back to something like Crawl he realized where he actually shines. This is a dogshit movie

Sarah Gadon is incredibly beautiful in this story of an accident-prone child. Few details along the way positively identify what is happening, but hints are around every corner. I did however intensely disliked the hypnosis reveal. The ending should have been more organic and not wrapped up in hocus-pocus. It was entertaining and worthwhile despite it's rather ridiculous ending.
