Give Ben Affleck autism in every movie and you've got one guaranteed sale. I love how Hollywood always treats autism like it's a superpower. Grim reality Ben Affleck's character would be contributing heavily to a Sonic the Hedgehog wiki.

Some decent (and unexpectedly brutal) action can't hide the fact that a good third of this is useless filler material. ...I guess it says a lot about how boring I am as a person, but I would've liked to see more accounting.

This had potential early on. There was a cool mystery about the main character. That devolved into a convoluted storyline where the hero is an autistic, martial arts master/stone cold killer/accountant who has a conscience, but basically no emotion. And his brother is the assassin villain. The acting and story is too comical to be taken at all seriously when you think about it. Affleck is basically a 'special needs' reincarnation of Steven Seagal in a cheesy 80's action film.

I know what we need to fix this film, a 15 minute block of exposition before the final act so the audience will give a flying fuck about any of these characters that aren't Super Autism Man as we stumble into the most obvious "twist" ever conceived that actually has no consequences or effect on the plot.

Ben Affleck IS..."Autistic Assassin". Never before in my life have I seen a movie that was 60% backstory. Imagine an emotionless, uncharismatic, unlikable, unrelatable version of "Bourne", "John Wick", "The Equalizer". Same crap. During the climactic gun battle I was counting the theatre's ceiling tiles. That's a first. Not a good sign. I didn't care about anyone or anything at any point. There is no joy, no passion. I think I would have preferred to watch Affleck just do taxes for 2 hours.

This movie blew my expectations. Affleck may have given his best performance ever in a movie, and the unique character he portrays is the best part of this all. O'Connor did a masterful job of making this movie centered on the characters and developing intriguing backstory throughout the run time of this movie. Kenderick was fine, but Bernthal really stood out as a great supporting character for Affleck. Even with very little action sequences (albeit some really good ones) this was really good.

Problem 1: This had a fine first act, but then took a wrong turn into Predictableville, USA. Problem 2: Many things didn't add up (pun intended). Final problem: What a waste of Lithgow.

Kinda like John Wick, but better, because it actually has a plot, which, while not without its problems, at least does some interesting things (kudos to me for good use of commas). A good treatment of functioning autism for an action-crime movie. The assassin skills and accounting skills felt shoe-horned together, though. "Um, let's just give him the crazy military dad who took him to martial arts masters overseas." And, like Barthalen, I would have liked to see more accounting.

Ehhhhhhh, this was alright. A daft but fun story and premise, some decent action and likeable actors. It was a bit exposition-heavy at points, and generally feels a bit all over the place, but kept me interested. Anna Kendrink appeared to be in a different film, and this was no bad thing. It's quite clever, but also silly. I can't really decide what I think about this. I need a nap.

It's cool to have an autistic person as the main character, and Affleck does a good enough job. Bernthal was good, as well, and the other people were just kinda there. And the movie itself was fine up until a certain point, where it seemingly shifted into another movie and they started forcing emotion in there. It just got kinda stupid so I can't recommend it, and apparently autism gives you super strength. HE ONLY KICKED HIM ONCE!

If two hours of watching Ben Affleck hulk around, mumble lines, and interact with superfluous characters sounds like an enjoyable film experience, then do I have a recommendation for you! In terms of ludicrous plots, this rates right up next to little Billy's story on why he didn't do his homework last night.

A movie I probably never would have watched or been interested in if it wasn't for the combined factors of a.) it's small but passionate cult following here on criticker and b.) it being available on netflix in my country. Overall, I was underwhelmed, the procedural bits were decent; the action bits, generic and uninteresting. Worst of all, though, speaking as someone on the spectrum, is that it's portrayal of autism while accurate, also felt very fetishistic and exploitative. [Full Review]

There's a real incongruity here. On the one hand, Affleck's depiction of Asperger's is maybe the most accurate I've ever seen, when it comes to social interactions. On the other hand, it takes its own silly plot far too seriously. I'm a fan of the ambition and the way it deals with Asperger's in general, which is enough to make this pretty good.

Decent but somewhat run of the mill thriller where the protagonist has autism. I've read some state how realistically autism is presented in this movie, but all I could take away from it is the message that people with Autism are like mutants in X-Men and each have a different superpower. That and military training is the best way to raise a child with Autism. And for what it's worth, my wife (an accountant ... but not autistic so no superpowers) said the accounting scenes were well done.

The enigmatic accountant both brilliant and bad-ass is a unique protagonist and a three-perspective approach (hero, villain, cop) offers a well-rounded study (though its occasional sentimentality feels forced-see the hotel scene). It doesn't work quite as well in the plot delivery, as the film feels a little scattered up until the third act overloaded with twists (albeit great bow-tying ones), but its ambition should be lauded (as an aside, so should its great cinematography and soundtrack).

Don't get me wrong, The Accountant is far from excellent. It jarringly mashes genres and doesn't explore its secondary characters enough. However, maybe I've been jaded from far worse screenplays lately, but this reeks of effort, for which I award points. The entire cast is great and each actor seems concerned with creating believable, different roles. Whether or not you're willing to buy the plot is up to you, it's handled and explored deftly.

An interesting premise, but they put in so many different ideas and gimmicks it all becomes a bit of a mumbled mess. There is no focus. SPOILERS: the treasury agent already has a lot of information about the accountant. Why the need to pressure his subordinate into starting from scratch? Also why the need to blackmail her if he wants her to succeed him? This is just one of the many illogical plot decisions. But other than that I still enjoyed it, would watch a sequel.

well well well, mr batfleck wants a piece of the Bourne action apparently. it's actually not bad, but I'll tell you what would be better, if he had downs instead of autism and slow-choked anna kendrick on the couch (shh-shh-shh-shhh). Now that would be killer.

problems: the uselessness of every single story part related to any act of the american government; many things that happen in the story don't find actual reasons for happening, many things are too superficial; that terrible scene where J K Simmons reveals when the accountant didn't kill him; the atmosphere and the rhythm of the movie are, most of the time, inappropriate. Poorly directed and edited.

I have a thing for movies with math freaks and geniuses - Rain Man, Goodwill Hunting (coincidentally also starring Ben Affleck), A Beautiful Mind and The Imitation Game. They are like "human" superhero movies. This one was right up the alley. It had everything - slick dialogues, humour, action, suspense and a above all - a gripping story right till the end. A few creative liberties were taken (I'm sure a good accountant can point out some flaws) but you can look past them and enjoy the movie!

A decent actioner that although painfully predictable is sufficiently different to stand out from the crowd. Sure it's silly, and structurally is very much akin to a superhero origins movie, but what it does it does well enough, and the idea of the main character being an autistic savant is a good one, and plays cleverly to Affleck's range as an actor.

The Accountant doesn't work. It's a heavy-on-exposition "thriller" that has silly plot twists, very little action (and none of it is good), shallow supporting characters, and weak villains. It adds up to very little, and will more likely have you counting sheep than sitting on the edge of your seat. But it does have a good Ben Affleck performance, and its portrayal of autism is more respectful than not. It's not all bad - it's just mostly not good. [Full Review]

Hear me out here. Let's get rid of about an hour and a half of exposition and labyrinthine plot. Ok, now let's fill up that vacant hour and a half with people getting shot in the face. Perfect. Now what shall we call this improved movie? How about John Wick.

You wouldn't know it at first glance, but over the last twenty years or so, Hollywood screenwriters have gradually become better at doing the smallest quantum of research before writing a script, and so it's now a real treat when a movie comes along that's penned by someone who truly knows nothing about the subjects they're trying to broach (autism, accounting, computers, money laundering, et al.) and clearly doesn't give a shit. Oh, and does anyone know why Kendrick's character was in this?

The Accountant has some interesting ideas but unfortunately I struggled to invest myself and buy into the ridiculous premise. Ben Affleck gives an impressive performance and he carries the muddled and tonally inconsistent plot. Whilst both Anna Kendrick & Jon Bernthal give serviceable performances too. But the criminally misused JK Simmons is nothing more than an exposition tool. There is enjoyment to be had but one too many coincidental and unforgiving twists took me out of the experience.

The Accountant is an enigma, in that I can't really tell if it was a smart movie dumbed-down or a dumb movie that touches upon interesting ideas. Affleck delivers a decent performance, but it's overshadowed by a plot that constantly provokes the reaction, "Really, you're going with that. Urgh! Fine, whatever." The twists and reveals are laughable, but put together this film is mildly entertaining.

If you liked the trailer you'll probably like The Accountant. It probably helped that my expectations were low after seeing other reviews but I ended up enjoying this movie. I thought the first part was good, slowed down in the middle and ended adequately. *****spoiler***** any movie where professionals kill or act without hesitation get's extra points from me.

Ben Affleck plays Matt Damon in 'Good Will Hunting', who in this universe, has instead of becoming a janitor became an accountant/master assassin. He is an autistic savant who... who, well does 'mathy stuff' in montages which they make a point of showing are VERY impressive. His acting has taken hits, but it's mostly true to the mannerisms of someone with severe autism. It's a fun, different action movie. For the sake of him not just being another wronged navy seal, I give originality points.
