there are a couple good laughs in this one, but it's paced too slow. had wilder put some more time into the writing to make the gags more constant this would have been great, as it is it's completely understandable why this is largely forgotten.

I love Madeline Khan SO much... it... the flames! Flames, on the side of my face, breathing... breathless... heaving breaths...

Gene Wilder's talent is evident in the many nice leafy touches, but in his first attempt at a triple-header (writer-director-star) he shows poor judgment and he gets bogged down in an overelaborate production. ... There's no mystery, and since you can't have a parody of a mystery without a mystery, there's no comic suspense.

Forgotten Wilder was a hit in its day when he, along with Feldman, Kahn and Deluise, was at the peak of his powers, riding high on Saddles and Frankenstein. Teaming up with Feldman and Kahn again was clearly the right move, and it's their natural chemistry that makes viewers sympathetic to the obvious deficiencies in writing and directing. Wilder's script plays like a first draft, and his timing of gags is widely uneven. Worth a look for fans who aren't expecting prime Brooks level fare.

Given the talent involved, this film is a disappointment. There are a few chuckles to be had, but a middling plot interrupted by too many musical interludes drags down the pace and neither the script nor the story is sharp enough to pick up the slack. Essentially it's just hammed-up slapstick. Feldman is great though.

There are some fun Sherlock parody moments, but most of this is spent on disconnected gags that seem to overstay their welcome. Nice to see Feldman play a fairly big role. Fav scene: final fight.

Distant recollection is that this is mildly amusing.

I love Gene Wilder when he doesn't direct himself. He directed this silly movie and it shows.

Wilder's directoral debut is wonderfully silly, clever and surreal, with a solid adventure structure to boot. Plus, it's wildly romantic. The whole cast is terrific, but the late, great Leo McKern excels as Moriarity. Hollywood forgot how to make comedies soon after this movie was released, making this one of the last outposts of genuine spoofery.

The movie for those who think Mel Brooks on his worst day is a little too stylish and sophisticated, Wilder's directorial debut is still amusing (and even gut busting at times, mostly thanks to Kahn) though it often sinks under the weight of its heavy-handed tomfoolery, and some self-conscious call-backs to the Feldman/Wilder dynamic in YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN. A game cast helps enormously, with McKern an especially endearing Moriarty, and Deluise's hamming opera star a comic highlight.

I guess I just don't like Gene Wilder's sense of humor.

Great cast with a few great laughs sprinkled throughout. Unfortunately the film drags in a few places and the screenplay is only half as clever as Wilder thinks it is. If he had just given it another once over then I really think the movie could have been something special.

An interesting failure but a failure nonetheless.
