Better than the other Rathbone films in that the mystery is quite solid and the film carries it's suspense relatively well. IT's a little silly at times but that's part of the charm and it doesn't get too distracting.

I like the silliness of the Basil Rathbone Sherlock films, much of which comes from Nigel Bruce's facial expressions reacting to Sherlock. Nice surprise to see Ida Lupino. It starts off strong with the courtroom scene and the cab banter. Why steal the crown jewels? Why not some easier to fence ones? Fav scene: Sherlock singing and dancing.

High budget from Fox gives Rathbone the platform he deserves. Also excellent is Zucco as the calculating Moriarty. A good scheme which makes for an enjoyable mystery.

Corny, but not nearly as corny as the later low-budget efforts. Rathbone is ideal, Ida Lupino is lovely, and George Zucco is a fine Moriarty.

One of the best Rathbone/Bruce Holmes movies. Watson is still a moron, but other than that it was well done, lots of suspense and an intricate mystery. I think they give away too much at the beginning, however.

Rather convoluted mystery, with early exposition scenes that undercut the intrigue. The banter is not on the same level as in 'Hound', but Rathbone is still enjoyable enough to make it very watchable, except that undercover routine which was annoying (although partly intentionally).

Rathbone and Bruce are in fine form here. Dr Watson in response to a passerby, who asks the prostrate Watson if he requires a doctor, "I am a doctor." Mr Holmes in response to Moriarty, who shares a buggy with his nemesis for their trips home, "Here we are at my lodgings, I'm so sorry I can't ask you in." And Zucco as Moriarty is almost equal to the task; on the same buggy ride home, "I'd like to devote my remaining years to abstract science," after he has eliminated Mr Holmes of course.

The film's introduction to Moriarty and his dastardly deeds lays the foundation for a top-tier suspense noir, evoking early Hitch. By the middle of the film, though, it is clear that even with Lupino's help, it can't capitalize on its potential. Its critical flaw is ridding this film world of Holmes' archnemesis with nothing more than a flight of fancy.

Honestly, the best bits of this film are whenever Holmes and Watson aren't in it. The early scene with Moriarty and the flute player is genuinely creepy, and Lupino is good whenever she's on screen, but whenever Holmes turns up it gets bogged down with cheesy dialogue and contrived plotting.

Ano de Centenário de Ida Lupino: Filme #2 (atriz). Bathbone talvez seja o Sherlock que mais se aproxime de seu equivalente literário, mas confesso que prefiro os pós-modernos (diga-se Cumberbatch). BlurayRip MySILU.

Despite my admiration of the Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes TV series, I will always hold some affection for Basil Rathbone's depiction of Holmes. It's Rathbone's vigor, alertness and sharp way of delivering Holmes' lines that are so memorable. He even walks in an energetic way one imagines Holmes as walking. Nigel Bruce's bumbling depiction of Holmes' colleague Dr. Watson has been ridiculed, but you may feel warmer towards him as well if you listen to his Holmes radio series on the Net.

This is an enjoyable Holmes outing that isn't much of a mystery since it lets you in on Moriarty's plan right from the start. As always, Rathbone is outstanding as Holmes and George Zucco is fantastic Moriarty. In fact, the draw in this film is mainly the enjoyable cast, as well as your one chance to see Rathbone sing a music hall number.

Ida Lupino makes The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1939) tantalizing. Wonderful performance to the already established Basil Rathbone & Nigel Bruce routine. She really looked haunted and that's where the chills comes from. From a more comic perspective Bruce had a great moments when laying on the road pretending to be dead. So yeah, the second Sherlock Holmes of the '39 is also great fun!
