The Aeronauts

As the ominous opening title informs us this is "based on true events", it's a shame that Harper didn't just cut out the middle man and completely fictionalise the story, given its *very* loose reporting of the facts and characters. Taken as a face-value entertainment, this delivers strongly in the air, with Jones and Redmayne an enjoyable odd-couple and some stunning (and viscerally thrilling) survival sequences; on terra firma, it looses its way (and momentum) becoming somewhat dreary.

I can't imagine why they would swap out a second dude character and instead insert an attractive young woman to play one of the lead roles.

I could really do without seeing Redmayne and Jones in another period piece for the rest of my life.

In a lot ways this was a well made film. It looks great. But the well documented historical alterations just drags the experience down.

I do not know much about the real happenings that inspired this piece... but boy do I wish that some movie makers would stop taking their audiences as morons. Sometimes we don't need over-the-top exaggerations and endless drama, only a somewhat accurate and maybe non-moronic story telling. Isn't history fascinating enough? I give this one 29 because some views were really nice and skies are generally a very beautiful Earth phenomenon.

If it were possible, my score would be well below 0. What a total disgrace to the history of science and the real people involved!

Do yourself a favor and avoid looking up what is fact or fiction. If you ignore the truth, the movie is incredibly effective, told via flashbacks with plenty of action and some nice scenery. Just go along for the ride.

I mean.. Just mediocre.. It does flow, but not amazingly intruiging.. To story almost has nothing to do with reality, and is just bland.

I don't know why this was marketed as a romance when it clearly wasn't? As a matter of fact, there's zero reason to gender swap Glaisher's assistant from a historically accurate man to a female. The meat of the story was so thinly spread, this could have very well worked as a short. We didn't need the flashbacks supplementing for a story. Few amazing visuals and decent performances bump the rating up.
