A romance story twisted to warm the Hays Code's hearts. And they had to go back to the 1870s to find morals to fit their own views on love and marriage. Handsome John Boles is engaged to sweet innocent Julie Haydon, but one day he meets and instantly falls for Irene Dunne. One major problem. She's a lady of divorce. And that makes it impossible from a moral point of view to marry her. The moral: It's better to live with a responsible melancholic marriage then living in marriage built on love.
