I greatly admire Demme's commitment to interspersing non-fiction offerings throughout his filmography, but I also need to sadly concede that this is not a strong effort. The film examine the life and contentious career of Jean Dominique, who operated a Haitian radio station committed to bringing information to the citizenry and speaking truth to power. It's easy to root for him, but the approach is too sedate. This impassivity prevents the film from moving past a dry recitation of bold history.

The power of speech, whether through films, radio or the press is such a vital entity to basic human liberties. Through this documentary, the voice of an agronomist who had a dream for a thriving people can live on beyond his assassination in April 2000, and his voice can continue to give hope to a nation who no longer hears his passionate oratories.

It's a very straightforward documentary focusing on a lot of interviews with Dominique. He's an extraordinary man and Demme clearly feels that the material speaks for itself. It mostly does. It's a frequently compelling if very dry film.
