Well, this is an oddball. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, but I am glad I saw it. The guys singing in the bathroom will be in my mind for a long time. On a side note, Cory McAbee would be an excellent Wolverine.

I applaud the invocation of art deco, silent film, and DalĂ-esque surrealism and the attempts to find profundity in quotidian set design. It just didn't work for me. The weirdness of it just didn't feel all that funny or novel or interesting to me.

Stunningly unique combination of styles - like Eraserhead meets Cowboy Bebop. Some of the ideas were very cool and amusingly off-kilter (the comedian scene was like watching Philip Glass's more esoteric pieces in visual form). Unfortunately though it essentially just stumbled around until it realised it had nothing to say. Funny, but often really weak and uninteresting despite all the insanity.

Enjoyed the musical bits - they were just a lot of fun and actually very original. Unfortunately, there is another hour of total shit. Felt like it wanted to be the glorious first son of Blue Velvet and Eraserhead, but instead turned out to be the bastard stepchild.

I watched it in my friend's apartment so maybe it wasn't the best place to see this movie, but it seemed to me like a bit of a directionless cluster of wacky moments. I loved the music, but the film seemed to meander most of the time. I want to give it a rewatch, but for now I'm pretty disappointed.

Certainly the weirdest movie I've seen in quite a while. It has an ersatz sci-fi-serial inspired plot peopled by characters like The Blueberry Pirate and The Boy Who Actually Saw a Woman%u2019s Breast and takes place in a bar on the asteroid Ceres, inside a spaceship that looks like a cross between a mobile home and an abandoned train car and also the planet Venus where the ephebephilic women can reproduce without the need for men. Kickass Midnight Movie.

While the retro scifi feel of the movie is nice, the plot is ridiculous, the humor isn't funny, and the songs are at best mediocre (and most of them have nothing to do with the story anyhow).

The American Astronaut is part musical, part 50's scifi, part western and all sorts of surreal. While the music, characters and often times brilliant black and white photography offer a unique trip, the story suffers and tends to seem more random than inspired. Though it makes a good effort it fails to be much more than a feature length music video, but there's worse things to be.

Pointless, dull drivel. Has that drawn-out feel common to many underground "gems", derived from what probably seemed like a good idea at the time combined with lazy or simply abscent scripting. Meh.

Enourmously inventive space-musical. Astronaut shoots about the galaxy making dodgy deals and friends. The design of the film is very much Flash Gordon gee-whizzery bred with range emptiness and Scott's space-truckin' Co. Giant steam press planets, sit alongside space-worthy wooden barns built by hyper-intelligent silver miners. Full of great music, and displays an insane amount of on-the-cheap technical proficiency.
