Possibly the most Sorkin-like of all his film scripts. The dialogue is exactly as quick and intelligent as expected. Unexpectedly the chemistry between stars Michael Douglas and Annette Benning sets a new standard for romantic comedies everywhere.

I watched this shortly after rewatching The West Wing and you can clearly see that Sorkin tried to put a whole season into a single movie. Unfortunately, even at 114 minutes it's way too short for that. As a consequence the whole thing feels shallow. The characters aren't developed, the plot is overly predictable and Sorkin's reverence of the US Presidency is mostly just annoying here. It doesn't help that Douglas feels flat throughout and that there's no chemistry with Bening. Safe and dull.

I love how Sorkin paints iterations of his ideals within each of his political characters, they all stumble down their own particular path to a better America, and his particular obsession with the man in The White House is endearing. Benning and Douglas are a little cooler then they could be, but it suffices, they're really just carrying the political dialogue.
