The Ape

Meh.

The film really doesn't work due to a huge lapse in logic. Without going into any spoilers, there is a part at around the middle of the movie were Dr. Adrian had the chance to get the help of the medical community and provide all the materials that he needs instead he turns them down. This film is watchable but not much else.

The rest of the cast is pretty good...but Karloff is of course Karloff. The Sheriff character was pretty funny too; I loved it when the one guy said that he was "losing his sense of humor." :D

Not a highlight of Karloff's career. Boris manages to maintain his dignity throughout, but this is still one of his silliest features.

Not every 'mad doctor' film Boris Karloff made was of good quality. Here comes The Ape (1940)! The persona borrows a lot from Before I Hang (1940) which he had just finished shooting for Colombia, but The Ape was a Monogram creation, which means very little money and crappy looking scenes. We get a lot of footage of a big ape walking around killing people. Cheesy as hell! Karloff is alright, but nothing else was!
