The Apple is engrossing, at times uncomfortable and subversive. Blurring the boundaries between fiction and documentary, it raises issues of consent, exploitation, but, most importantly, the notion of joy in a society that prevents it, both personally and politically. It's glorious, really. Continues the great tradition of freezed ending shots as well.

It's a credit to Makhmalbaf that she never looks at this family with anything other than the utmost sympathy. This sympathetic viewpoint means the film never feels exploitative, and that she refuses to demonise the parents turns what could have been a straightforward film into one of great emotional depth and insight. What is already a complicated film is made even more so by how it functions not only as a semi-documentary retelling of a true story, but also on a broader symbolic level.

A story of enchantment and socialisation. There are a few scenes where the intention of symbolic objects seems a bit uncertain, such as the apple in the last scene, but as the first film by this director, the storytelling and filming seems pretty mature.
