The Art of Racing in the Rain

Nice little film that was great to watch on a plane. I could have a bit of a cry and no one would notice. That said, this story was a completely predictable "by the numbers" sentimental, smaltzy tear jerker where the dog was by far the best actor.

I liked it, but the dog movies Hollywood is churning out these days are all mostly the same. This one spent a whole lot of time in the "sad" state, so keep that in mind if you bring the kids. Also, anyone who follow racing knows Denny's career arc as a race car driver is--unlikely--but that's okay. It's not a movie killer.

I could not finish the book because of the bit in the story where Denny gets angry at Enzo, it made no sense. I hated the movie even more for showing me Amanda Seyfried without eyebrows. And the dog was Costner? I couldn't tell.

This is a sad film but a good one. It's one of very few films where I can say I've read the novel its based on. I'm not really sure why its categorised as comedy, as I wouldn't call it that, if anything its quite sobering - its more of a family friendly drama really. Its thoughtful and somewhat sentimental, cheesy and perhaps a bit predictable but mostly a good watch, so overly I'd (perhaps cautiously) recommend it, yes.

Ventimiglia is surprisingly decent and the dog character very well built. Other than that, quite ordinary.

I get the feeling that fans of the book - a co-worker of mine is a MASSIVE fan - may find this movie lacking in how quickly it moves from plot point to plot point. I understand that as an artistic choice, never lingering in one spot too long, rather just letting the moments pass naturally, but you're still telling a story at the end of the day. Amanda Seyfried is really good; it's probably the best performance of hers I've ever seen. I'm not in love with it, though there's content of value here.

So touching and enjoyable

A sometimes gut-wrenching movie that is completely upended by a goofy and unneccessary voiceover.

SPOILERS. Based on a book, but designed in an evil laboratory with the purpose of harvesting your tears. They will try every trick in the book to induce crying including golden retrievers, cancer, and custody battles. Kevin Costner's constant narration was distracting early on, but I can't deny this was actually a decent enough movie.

Usually movies with dogs in it aren't boring for me, but this one was.

Take headache meds more than once? Brain tumor. (at least it wasn't the dreaded movie cough) Death, tears, more death, more tears. Tack on a very unlikely courtroom drama where the grandparents try to take the daughter from a loving father and you've got yourself a very boring movie.

I said it before: just put cars in a movie and I'll like it. It still holds true. This was was actually quite beautiful. A slow-burn feel-good movie. Sure it was predictable, but it didn't relaly take away from it. And the wide-angle shots of the different settings are just beautiful. Would I watch it again? Probably not, but I still enjoyed it thoroughly.
