A solid and commanding performance by Burton dominates an intriguing but ultimately muddled depiction of Trotsky's last days; Losey's direction is fine but can't conceal that the film is basically a series of speeches to showcase its star, with only sketchy characterisations for everyone else. Film also assumes a close familiarity with Trotsky and his work, which makes it difficult to connect with at times. Worthwhile for Burton aficianados.
