I can't put my finger on exactly what, but something about this movie really clicked with me. The clever take on a tired genre, starved of fresh ideas? The minimalist (yet creepy-as-hell) setting? The surprisingly decent acting (I've always liked Brian Cox)? The gruesomely realistic practical effects? The unspoiled naked female cadaver sitting on the operating table for 80% of the movie? Okay, the unspoiled naked female cadaver sitting on the operating table for 80% of the movie. Sue me.

Has a nice Pontypool vibe with the single location. Falls apart a bit like it too. I love Brian Cox. Pretty great premise for a horror movie but it eventually feels a little...stupid. That said, it's fun and almost fail-proof with its focused morbid setting. I loved Trollhunter and this only reinforced my excitement for Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. Go horror.

A decent, but pretty standard horror movie with a couple relatively effective jump scares. Cox and Hirsch have a solid chemistry and the corpse's backstory deserved a little more exploration because the conjecture that the coroners provided was pretty interesting.

The first half of this is interesting and suspenseful stuff. It's like a paranormal investigation discovery episode. Then it gradually devolves into horror hokeyville which is rather unfortunate. The build up and characters are so damn interesting but it's too bad the writing couldn't have been more polished. The first half gets a solid 75 but the last half a 55. Hirsch and Cox are great as a father and son morgue team. Both seem a tad wasted from their full potential though.

Quite a decent build up for a horror movie, but it looses its steam halfway.

It starts out with a neat premise but it becomes progressively less interesting the more we learn until it has all become rather silly. On the other hand Brian Cox owns and there is some creepy imagery so in the end it is a passable horror diversion.

The way I watched this film is a lesson for me & I'm not sure I'll ever be able to experience a film like this again but certainly want to try - esp with horror. I knew absolutely nothing about what would happen in this film & found it totally riveting. Even if I had seen a trailer, I would've ranked this high since the filmmakers are masterful at creating suspense. The big reveal was also a very unexpected and satisfying twist. It also moved at a very brisk pace & was over before I expected.

Above average supernatural horror movie. Brian Cox and Emile Hirsch make a great father and son team, and the premise is unique enough to keep it interesting to the end.

The first two acts of this movie are amazing, but it falls way the hell apart at the end. But still make time to watch, because it is really really good until it isn't.

What a waste of potential.. It started off really well with the atmosphere and characters but dragged to normality very, very qucikly. I was actually too scared to watch it at first because of all the hype, turns out it was just a standard horror flick with nothing special. The ending and the premise turned out to be a disappointment.

I liked how the story went straight to the point. The first act was well achieved and promise was well build. Unfortunately the rest of the movie was usual paranormal run though. They tried to build something in the end but failed badly.

Pretty good buildup / start of the movie actually.. until things started to get surreal. Then horribleness made its move :(

The first half establishes a wonderfully immersive atmosphere, laying the groundwork for a gripping psychological thriller. Strong acting as always from Brian Cox, and the supporting cast is pretty believable as well. Unfortunately, the second half is somewhat weaker, mainy because of questionable decisions by the writers. The principle of 'less is more' held true earlier in the film, and could have elevated this work if only the filmmakers had stuck to it.

Creepy, queasy horror film goes the 'haunted house' route for most of its length -- to its benefit, as it develops a genuinely unsettling and brooding atmosphere, with particular attention to the claustrophobic layout of the morgue building; invaluable once the scares start! Cox and Hirsch are perfect as the father/son team, and the casually (but brutally) graphic autopsy scenes set the viewer on edge from the start. Almost perfect in its set up and execution.

Another over-hyped indie horror movie that ultimately disappoints. It started off fairly well, but once the scary things started happening, it devolved into generic modern horror fare. I didn't really feel scared at all. The twist near the end is sort of interesting, but means very little. And the actual ending was such an anti-climax. Cox and Hirsch are okay, but their characters are idiots and don't feel real at all. Add in the cliché tragic backstory and you've seen all of this before.

Extra points on this one for a movie that totally switched gears (and genres) midway through!

It holds firm to the "autopsy" part of its title, breathing a spark of originality and genuine mystery into the film. It unfolds in accordance with the flesh of the corpse peeling away and cox and hirsch may look nothing like father and son but are both such good actors they sell both the relationship and the unraveling of the puzzle. The tension is much more lively than the scares themselves which are for the most part rote however the surrounding film allows forgiveness for these moments.

Certainly a decent horror film to enjoy. It's first half is a tour de force in introductory stroytelling with a great feeling of suspense. For me, the real test for a horror movie starts when the metaphysical shit gets unleashed and this one fails to pass the metaphysical test, unfortunately: Jane Doe's spirit doesn't have the fatal strength and rigor you'd expect from a hardcore horror movie. That having said, its subtext is still politically relevant and noteworthy. Recommended.

I don't know why but this movie really worked for me. Most of the jump scares worked, the atmosphere was creepy as hell, the direction was spot on and the sound design didn't beat me over the head which was a nice change compared to most of the modern horror films I've seen lately. One of the best and scariest "ghost" stories I've seen in quite some time.

Starts off intriguing but gets very silly very quickly. Tries to fit in too many twists.
