I can't put my finger on exactly what, but something about this movie really clicked with me. The clever take on a tired genre, starved of fresh ideas? The minimalist (yet creepy-as-hell) setting? The surprisingly decent acting (I've always liked Brian Cox)? The gruesomely realistic practical effects? The unspoiled naked female cadaver sitting on the operating table for 80% of the movie? Okay, the unspoiled naked female cadaver sitting on the operating table for 80% of the movie. Sue me.

Has a nice Pontypool vibe with the single location. Falls apart a bit like it too. I love Brian Cox. Pretty great premise for a horror movie but it eventually feels a little...stupid. That said, it's fun and almost fail-proof with its focused morbid setting. I loved Trollhunter and this only reinforced my excitement for Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. Go horror.

A decent, but pretty standard horror movie with a couple relatively effective jump scares. Cox and Hirsch have a solid chemistry and the corpse's backstory deserved a little more exploration because the conjecture that the coroners provided was pretty interesting.

The first half of this is interesting and suspenseful stuff. It's like a paranormal investigation discovery episode. Then it gradually devolves into horror hokeyville which is rather unfortunate. The build up and characters are so damn interesting but it's too bad the writing couldn't have been more polished. The first half gets a solid 75 but the last half a 55. Hirsch and Cox are great as a father and son morgue team. Both seem a tad wasted from their full potential though.

The way I watched this film is a lesson for me & I'm not sure I'll ever be able to experience a film like this again but certainly want to try - esp with horror. I knew absolutely nothing about what would happen in this film & found it totally riveting. Even if I had seen a trailer, I would've ranked this high since the filmmakers are masterful at creating suspense. The big reveal was also a very unexpected and satisfying twist. It also moved at a very brisk pace & was over before I expected.

Above average supernatural horror movie. Brian Cox and Emile Hirsch make a great father and son team, and the premise is unique enough to keep it interesting to the end.

It starts out with a neat premise but it becomes progressively less interesting the more we learn until it has all become rather silly. On the other hand Brian Cox owns and there is some creepy imagery so in the end it is a passable horror diversion.

Another over-hyped indie horror movie that ultimately disappoints. It started off fairly well, but once the scary things started happening, it devolved into generic modern horror fare. I didn't really feel scared at all. The twist near the end is sort of interesting, but means very little. And the actual ending was such an anti-climax. Cox and Hirsch are okay, but their characters are idiots and don't feel real at all. Add in the cliché tragic backstory and you've seen all of this before.

Creepy, queasy horror film goes the 'haunted house' route for most of its length -- to its benefit, as it develops a genuinely unsettling and brooding atmosphere, with particular attention to the claustrophobic layout of the morgue building; invaluable once the scares start! Cox and Hirsch are perfect as the father/son team, and the casually (but brutally) graphic autopsy scenes set the viewer on edge from the start. Almost perfect in its set up and execution.

I liked how the story went straight to the point. The first act was well achieved and promise was well build. Unfortunately the rest of the movie was usual paranormal run though. They tried to build something in the end but failed badly.

Certainly a decent horror film to enjoy. It's first half is a tour de force in introductory stroytelling with a great feeling of suspense. For me, the real test for a horror movie starts when the metaphysical shit gets unleashed and this one fails to pass the metaphysical test, unfortunately: Jane Doe's spirit doesn't have the fatal strength and rigor you'd expect from a hardcore horror movie. That having said, its subtext is still politically relevant and noteworthy. Recommended.

I don't know why but this movie really worked for me. Most of the jump scares worked, the atmosphere was creepy as hell, the direction was spot on and the sound design didn't beat me over the head which was a nice change compared to most of the modern horror films I've seen lately. One of the best and scariest "ghost" stories I've seen in quite some time.

The first half establishes a wonderfully immersive atmosphere, laying the groundwork for a gripping psychological thriller. Strong acting as always from Brian Cox, and the supporting cast is pretty believable as well. Unfortunately, the second half is somewhat weaker, mainy because of questionable decisions by the writers. The principle of 'less is more' held true earlier in the film, and could have elevated this work if only the filmmakers had stuck to it.

What a waste of potential.. It started off really well with the atmosphere and characters but dragged to normality very, very qucikly. I was actually too scared to watch it at first because of all the hype, turns out it was just a standard horror flick with nothing special. The ending and the premise turned out to be a disappointment.

It holds firm to the "autopsy" part of its title, breathing a spark of originality and genuine mystery into the film. It unfolds in accordance with the flesh of the corpse peeling away and cox and hirsch may look nothing like father and son but are both such good actors they sell both the relationship and the unraveling of the puzzle. The tension is much more lively than the scares themselves which are for the most part rote however the surrounding film allows forgiveness for these moments.

It became clear pretty quickly what was going on here and I found it a bit campy and silly. It seems offensive that the story hinges on the realization that (spoiler alert?) at least some of the victims of historical witch trials were really witches after all! It also felt exploitative that most of the action takes place with two male coroners in one room with a dead naked young beautiful female body on display in the middle.

Contains all the standard tropes of a horror film, so you'll get the jump scares exactly when you expect them - but at least the story is mildly interesting. I was expecting more mystery and less jump scare though. Also dat last frame...

This is an underrated nugget. Might not blow your minds but it uses a pretty unique setup fairly well to draw you in and keep you guessing. It does go for some standard horror tropes and cliches but most movies do. The performances by both Brian Cox and Emile Hirsch are great and carry the film but you have to tip your hat to Olwen Kelly, who delivers one of the best cadaver performance ever. The realness heightens the tension.

The setting and story are so natural and very probable to happen-- if ever spirits and spells do thrive. The entire plot is absorbing, thrilling, and put me on my chair's edge. Starts out great and builds tension up so well but it fails to deliver with those shitty last 15 minutes. It had so much feminist potential. I wish they depicted Jane Doe as a victim to sexist traditions and show her as a character that was haunting people to tell her story. And in the end, when our protagonists figured her story out, she should have found peace and left them alone instead of turning into some stupid ghost witch who kept looking for new victims.

A combination of creative (the slight twist, parts of the plot), generic (the jump scares, the ending) and both at once (the elevator scene). If you haven't seen many horror films, this one may seem to be a highly original and creepy film. But there are many things that I’ve seen in other movies already. The sound effects on the autopsy parts are great, and I truly do like the twist as this is the first movie I recall doing something of the sort. But as a whole it’s only good, not great.

As the main plot device, our lovely Jane doe, you will not know what this film is about at first. A brilliant premise of mystery and suspense transforms into a horrible night for our main characters, son and dad, which are skillfully represented by our main cast. The setting will wrap you in a sense of claustrophobia enhanced by the darkness of the film. While the final product makes use of some generic ways to bring out the fear, it does it well, but its strength rest on the interesting setup.

Excellent appreciation of form, very nice cyclical elements, super great editing. I disliked the filter to make everything clinical, though I appreciate why it was done; all in all, the film lacked a bit of punch - of wow factor - but I loved the way this film was executed, with a genuinely novel idea and an avoidance of most of the regular clichés. Decent, all in all!

Does a decent job for what must have been a pretty small budget. I usually like Emile Hirsch but he was a bit bland here, although Brian Cox makes up for it. The first half is pretty engaging and racks up the tension nicely as Cox and Hirsch play coroner detectives, but a few odd decisions deflate the plot somewhat and even Cox can't carry it past a certain point.

İlginç 1 korku filmi. Kanlı cinayetler işlenen 1 evde, gömülü 1 kadın cesedi bulunur. Kadının otopsisi yapılırken, evde tuhaf olaylar başlar. Gerçekler 1 yandan ortaya çıkarken, 1 yandan da evden çıkmaya çalışırlar. Korku unsurları çok iyi. Konu sağlam olmasına karşın klişeler de kullanılmış. Brian Cox çok iyi. Arkadaşların durumu kötü. Filmin sonunda, cadımız kurtuluyor. Her canlı 1 gün ölümü tadacaktır.

Fair bit of tension, well-orchestrated ambiance. But the script and acting make this feel like a SyFy channel original. If you want to go back to the horror basics, you gotta get the fundamentals. Otherwise, you're stuck with a half-baked idea and a shoddy execution. And maybe that was forgivable in the old days, when there was a certain kind of novelty to vampires, witches and zombies, but these days, if you don't care about the actors, it's hard to care about the movie.

I really liked The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016) up until the final act. André Øvredal was good at avoiding the biggest horror clichés with a fairly grounded black comedy approach to autopsies. But the end felt like the usual horror stuff...

The mystery of the first half of the film held me captive. I paused it at this point with plans to resume the next day. During the interim, I pondered the film several times and thought I knew where the film was going, but I was wrong. Jane Doe's eyes became increasingly more sinister as the film progressed. I would love to know if something was done to create this effect or if I was projecting it. Either way, it speaks to the creators. It is hard for me to think of something I didn't like.

Neat little chamber play of a horror movie that could have done more with even less; the middle drags more than any 85-minute movie has a right to. But a really nice setup, a creepy atmosphere and Cox's gravitas go a long way.

The acting was very good, and the first 60% of the movie hooked me. But then it went into messy, ridiculous horror tropes, cliches, awfully written dialogue, and idiotic decisions, and I lost all interest. The movie is really, really stupid and braindead. But the visual effects, art style, sound design, and acting is all fantastic. Too bad it was wasted on such a bad script. The story is extremely thin and pointless and that's all I'll reveal about that. Do not expect much plot from this movie.
