A huge bounce back for Scorsese after the disappointing Gangs of New York. This was a very entertaining picture, with fine performances from DiCaprio and Blanchett. Felt a bit long, but I can't think of anything that should be cut. The flying sequences were stunning.

Great cinematography and colors (imitating color films of the years its set in) and there's some good acting on display here, but it didn't really grab me. Too long and slow, and it jumps around sometimes with little sense. The last half hour's pretty good, though.

A big, messy, overlong bore. Only the marvelous techs save this from being totally unwatchable. DiCaprio's obnoxious and affected shtick feels like something straight out of Rain Man or I Am Sam. Cate Blanchett's Oscar winning Kate Hepburn impression feels like something out of a drag show.

It may lose traction in its third hour, and DiCaprio's performance doesn't quite seem to live up to the impressive highs of my first viewing, but Scorcese's film is quite the entertainer. Glossy, loud and oh-so-Hollywood, it's impossible not to be taken up with the grandeur of it all. And Blanchett's Oscar-winning performance has to be seen to be believed.

If there were a way to edit out DiCaprio and put someone older and more capable of carrying a film in his place, this might be a good film. As it is, only the technicals and the always divine Cate Blanchett save this from utter ruin. It's overlong, muddy and miscast.

Even though it got off to a great start, "The Aviator" ended up being a very inconsistent film. It had really great, involving scenes, but also ones that bored me enough to think about halting my viewing of it. The acting was great, particularly on the part of DiCaprio, and the story was on the whole well told and interesting, especially with the mental degeneration of Howard Hughes. The film wasn't a complete success, but not a bust either; it was just too long to be an incredibly great watch.

"The Aviator" continues Scorsese's recent trend for mild misfires. The first part, featuring Hughes as an overambitious filmmaker, is fascinating and packs up some fantastic sequences and quite a few Scorsese visual trademarks. The second half, though, is underwhelming at best. Scorsese is famous for being able to elevate the material he is given, but he fails to do so way too often in "The Aviator". Good performances by DiCaprio and Blanchett.

I can't help but think that this film would've benefited from The Irishman treatment - Make it 3 1/2 hours long and use CG to age the actors over 40 years. For as talented a storyteller as Scorsese is, The Aviator still feels incomplete, Hughes was a complicated man and an influential figure in multiple industries, and this only feels like it scratches the surface. Still, it has great performances from most of the cast, and as can be expected from Scorsese, is a technical marvel.

The Aviator was a great movie yet a little hard to watch which was by design. It isn't something I would want to watch over and over again. This is my second or third viewing of the movie and I was supremely impressed with Cate Blanchett's portrayal of Katherine Hepburn. There were other great actors that showed up to be a part of a Martin Scorsese film and they did a great job. Alan Alda is one of those character actors that I always want more of whenever I see him. A bit long but good overall.

Solid directing, acting and score, but a bit too long and scattershot, and with hardly any likeable people. I suppose it’s meant to show everything about Hughes’ life, but the moment I became interested in his life as a director it switched to Aviation, and then to his mental illness, then back to Aviation. For the most part the length of the film wasn’t a problem until the last 30 minutes or so, in which it started to feel mildly repetitive. Otherwise a quality film.

Things Scorsese can make. I distinctly remember the Di-Caprio bashing back then. And the risks he takes as an actor. The obsessive components of Howard Hugh's character is also perfectly portrayed. Cate Blanchette gives a superlative performance as Hepburn. And the sounds, music, ambiance, use of juxtaposed pictures - create an absolute hell of of atmosphere and technical superiority.

victory is an ironic one, though Scorcese declines to share it fully with the audience. That one-mile jaunt 70 feet above L.A. harbor was the only time the plane would ever fly; it was subsequently towed away to be hidden in a hangar, where it would not be seen again by the public until after Hughes's death three decades later. It's a fitting conclusion to The Aviator. Like the plane, the film also has its moments aloft. But for all its size and shimmer it never really goes anywhere.

Not the best DiCaprio or Scorcese movie to ever come out, but goddamn is it great. The Hughes story is super interesting and translates fascinatingly well to cinema, and with Scorcese's direction and DiCaprio (as well as Blanchett's acting), the story is elevated (excuse the pun) to an awesome level. A great movie.

Especially in the first act and last, the direction and cinematography can be extremely showey, and the "spectacular" flying scenes could've been more spectacular if they weren't bogged down by this awful primitive CGI. Otherwise, this is a fine and watchable film, but it takes a lot of impressive camera movements before I started to get invested in this character (whose achievements makes me feel personally like a piece of shit).

Cate Blanchett absolutely kills it as Katharine Hepburn, and DiCaprio's great as always (even if he doesn't quite manage to disappear into the role of Howard Hughes). It's definitely not Scorsese's best, but that's really a silly statement to even have to make with a director as great as he.

DiCaprio's performance is just as lightweight and serviceable as I've come to expect from the man which alongside some weak directorial choices make the pinnacle of Hughes' OCD in the final hour an unconvincing chore to sit through. Still the film is visually bold, its script is witty and engaging and the flights are generally quite exciting, though are lessened by cgi which feels hypocritical in a film that lauds Hughes' determination to capture exciting flight scenes with real planes.

Martin Scorsese expertly exploits our cultural fascination with Hughes, delivering an in-depth, three-hour character study. He concentrates on Hughes' internal struggles, and his film quickly reveals itself as a--well-made and eloquent--tragedy. Though Leonardo DiCaprio's titanic persona initially gets in the way of his believability as Hughes, the actor excels as a man well aware of yet helplessly trapped by his personal demons.
