A huge bounce back for Scorsese after the disappointing Gangs of New York. This was a very entertaining picture, with fine performances from DiCaprio and Blanchett. Felt a bit long, but I can't think of anything that should be cut. The flying sequences were stunning.

I could never quite get into this one. It's awesome technically, but it feels mechanical and at times almost soulless. I'm also not a big fan of Leonard DiCaprio here. Cate Blanchett is great, though.

If there were a way to edit out DiCaprio and put someone older and more capable of carrying a film in his place, this might be a good film. As it is, only the technicals and the always divine Cate Blanchett save this from utter ruin. It's overlong, muddy and miscast.

It may lose traction in its third hour, and DiCaprio's performance doesn't quite seem to live up to the impressive highs of my first viewing, but Scorcese's film is quite the entertainer. Glossy, loud and oh-so-Hollywood, it's impossible not to be taken up with the grandeur of it all. And Blanchett's Oscar-winning performance has to be seen to be believed.

A big, messy, overlong bore. Only the marvelous techs save this from being totally unwatchable. DiCaprio's obnoxious and affected shtick feels like something straight out of Rain Man or I Am Sam. Cate Blanchett's Oscar winning Kate Hepburn impression feels like something out of a drag show.

Great cinematography and colors (imitating color films of the years its set in) and there's some good acting on display here, but it didn't really grab me. Too long and slow, and it jumps around sometimes with little sense. The last half hour's pretty good, though.

Leonardo DiCaprio, it's not your fault, I just don't really like you. I didn't care for you back on Family Ties. I didn't like Titanic. No sir, I don't care for you. That said, this is the second best movie I've seen you in. I liked you performance in Catch Me if You Can better. But this movie is well acted and smartly written. And someday you'll look like you're over 21.

Hollywood puts out a lot of true stories and most of them turn out to be crap. Yet, this is an certainly an exception to the rule...One might say just as Howard Robard Hughes, Jr. was certainly an exception to the rule.

"The Aviator" continues Scorsese's recent trend for mild misfires. The first part, featuring Hughes as an overambitious filmmaker, is fascinating and packs up some fantastic sequences and quite a few Scorsese visual trademarks. The second half, though, is underwhelming at best. Scorsese is famous for being able to elevate the material he is given, but he fails to do so way too often in "The Aviator". Good performances by DiCaprio and Blanchett.

Even though it got off to a great start, "The Aviator" ended up being a very inconsistent film. It had really great, involving scenes, but also ones that bored me enough to think about halting my viewing of it. The acting was great, particularly on the part of DiCaprio, and the story was on the whole well told and interesting, especially with the mental degeneration of Howard Hughes. The film wasn't a complete success, but not a bust either; it was just too long to be an incredibly great watch.

Didn't have the "feel" of a Martin Scorsese picture, necessarily, but he does the glitz and glamour here well; very entertaining. Feels a bit long, but there's nothing entirely inconsequential in the picture. DiCaprio is very engaging in this; I enjoyed his performance a lot, and he made watching this very fun.

A great looking epic biopic, but nothing to warrant its Best Picture nomination. Regardless of a nomination for DiCaprio, his Hughes never drew me in, madness/craziness or not. This thing is overstuffed, overlong, and not memorable (even for Scorsese) outside of Blanchett and much of the imagery.

The Aviator is a good film with fine production values, and a beguiling performance from Di Caprio. However, there is a narrative misgiving in The Aviator between Howard Hughes's life and his character. Howard Hughes's life is well documented but the character is left less established. Hughes's eccentricities are not particularly explained and this leaves him as a rather two-dimensional character.

Leo does an intense characterization of the late Howard Hughes. Some of it was a little too much pretty-boy that I don't think was at all what HH was like, but the neurotic/psychotic/maniacal aspects I think he got down pretty well. HH was a unique personality and not easy to replicate on screen.
