There's something admirably uncontrived about the way dialogue scenes are ornamented to make them more visually engaging. The musical numbers and fantasy sequences, too, are well-integrated into the narrative, but they're lame in a cynical, tossed-off way, unspectacular but still excessive. And the film isn't in the spirit of Dahl; though like him, it treats macabre material with a light touch, it's out of fear to offend, whereas Dahl was just callous.

One day they will crack how to do a Roald Dahl film. Dark, menacing and generally nasty, not over saccharine and plot fiddling like this.

The notion of capturing nightmares and releasing good dreams was so enchanted as a child, but it tries a little too hard to be precious.
